Select the tab for the type of search. Each tab has everything you need to do to perform that type of search.

(Results of more than 500 will not return images.)

This search will show only accessions that have material that may be requested, including those not seasonally available.
You may list accessions with separators (commas or semicolons, as shown below) or by entering them on separate lines, such as
PI 651794

Believed to be from inventory PI 479427 19ncai1 PL at Ames. From the record of NA 82431, received from the same source in 2015: This accession (a single clone?) was reacquired through North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station at Ames, Iowa from the University of New Hampshire at Durham, to whom we distributed material in 1985. In 2007, visiting staff from Ames were impressed by its high performance over most other plants of this species and even other genera, and became interested in evaluating it through the NC-7 Regional Woody Ornamental Trials program. Cuttings were sent to Ames in 2008 and 2009, and plants grown from cuttings of the resulting plants were returned to the USNA in 2015. Our last remaining plants of NA 51058 died several years ago but several other accessions from this expedition continue to grow well.2191327PI 479427 NA 89017

The soils of this are characterized as Tusquitee Series Loam, 10 to 25 percent slopes. The Tusquitee Series consists of very deep, well drained soils on gently sloping to very steep benches, foot slopes, toe slopes, and fans in coves in the Southern Blue Ridge mountains, MLRA 130B. These soils formed in colluvium derived from materials weathered from igneous and high-grade metamorphic crystalline rocks such as granite, mica gneiss, hornblende gneiss, and schist. Slope ranges from 2 to 95 percent. Solum thickness ranges from 1 to 3+ meters. Reaction is very strongly acid to slightly acid, in the A horizon. The Bw and lower horizons are very strongly acid to moderately acid. In the upper 1 meter, content of rock fragments, dominantly of gravel to stone size, ranges up to 35 percent. Below 1 meter, rock fragment content may range up to 60 percent. Content of mica flakes ranges from few to common. Soils: The underlying geology of this area is the St. Michaels Formation of Miocene origin. The Lower Miocene St. Marks Formation, named by Finch (1823), is exposed in Wakulla, Leon and Jefferson Counties on the northwestern flank of the Ocala Platform. It is a white to yellowish gray, poorly to moderately indurated, sandy, fossiliferous (molds and casts) limestone (packstone to wackestone). Mollusk molds and casts are often abundant. The St. Marks Formation makes up the upper part of the FAS in part of the eastern panhandle.

The surface soil profile found in this area is Otela limestone substratum-Ortega sands (0 to 5 percent slopes). The Otela Series consists of very deep, moderately well drained, moderately slowly to slowly permeable soils on broad uplands. They formed in sandy and loamy marine sediments over limestone on karst topography. Slopes range from 0 to 8 percent. The Ortega series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils that formed in a sandy deposit on marine terraces. These soils are on nearly level to strongly sloping upland landscapes. Slopes range from 0 to 12 percent. Ortega Series soils are generally strongly acid.

Layer propagated in 2015 from a plant purchased in 2011 from Gardens Oy Vey. Their catalog description indicated that the plant was probably a named Japanese cultivar that had lost its name, so they gave it the name 'Lil' Raspberry' to sell under. The invoice listed it with the code "hy-hyu-ko", and it does somewhat resemble some photos of a cultivar listed as 'Hyuga-konjo' ['Hyuga konjou', 'Hyuga konjyo']; this is apparently what the nursery suspected its true identity might be. It does not root easily from cuttings and has unusually deep-colored flowers for a Hydrangea serrata, from hot pink to cobalt blue depending on pH, with both fertile and sterile florets being deep in color.2153685NA 84575

This form is somewhat hardier than other forms of H. febrifuga we've grown, so there is a chance it is actually H. x versicolor; however, it has never flowered outdoors, so more definitive identification remains elusive.
