Environment description: Damp cliff face below minor waterfall, protected from deer browsing. Growing in half- to three-quarters shade. Soil: Rocky, gravelly with fair amount of organic matter. Slope: 60°. Aspect: Northwest. Elevation: 3488 feet.

Associated species: Elatostema umbellatum; Euptelea polyandra; Cercidiphyllum japonicum; Hydrangea involucrata; Carpinus cordata; Acer capillipes; Acer diabolicum; Acer nipponicum.
Comment: Small shrub, very herbaceous-y looking, reaching for light away from rocks. Height 30 to 50 cm; Spread to 50 cm. Stems green and hairy. Leaves typical for the species; coarse, large with bifid apices, prominent hairs on both ab- and adaxial sides, lots of herbivory. Ovoid, green to brown capsules, ca 1 cm; usually 5-7 borne upon open infructescences; old calyces often present. Seed collected from more than 10 plants. Japanese name refers to a silver drinking cup.
