Environment description: Plants growing in part shade in a very dry and rocky, mostly deciduous habitat. Slope: 25 percent. Aspect: variable. The underlying geology of this area is Biotite Gneiss, primarily of Precambrian-Paleozoic origin. (Source: USGS North Carolina Geologic Map Data.) The primary soil type in the collection area is classified as Porters Series which is stony and steep. The Porters series consists of deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils on cool, north- to east-facing or shaded ridges and side slopes in the Southern Blue Ridge mountains. These soils formed in residuum, affected by soil creep in the upper part, that has weathered from felsic to mafic, high-grade metamorphic and igneous rocks such as granite, gneiss, hornblende gneiss, mica gneiss, and amphibolite. Slope ranges from 2 to 95 percent. The surface layer to 18cm deep is very dark grayish brown loam; moderate fine and medium granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; few fine mica flakes; slightly acid. From 18 to 90 cm soil range from brown loam with weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure, few mica flakes, and few medium gneiss and quartz fragments that is moderately acid to sandy loam with gneiss saprolite with quartz, weathered feldspar, hornblende, mica and other minerals that is slightly acid and grades into hard rock.
