Environment description: Trail edge/embankment along the west side of the Kaeda River, canopy dominated by Quercus glauca, Quercus gilva, and Cryptomeria japonica. Growing in variable [light], but typically quarter- to half-shade. Soil: Humusy gravel and rock. Slope: 75°. Aspect: East-southeast. Elevation: 110 feet.

Comment: Small, open, multi-stemmed shrubs, leaves often clustered on branch ends, typically growing on steep embankment/cliff above and below the trail. Height 1 to 1.5 m; Spread 1.5 m. Bark reddish when young, becoming light tan. Leaves typical for species, pubescent on both ab- and adaxial sides; herbivory common. Green, ovoid capsules to 1.5 cm in length, prominent 'horns' on ends, usually 3-4 within open infructescences, accompanied by green, peltate bracts. Seed collected from 14 plants.
