Narrative
Shrub deciduous, 1.5-1.8 meters tall, dense habit. Pubescent branchlets. Leaves short petioled, the oblong to elliptic-ovate blades mostly 4-12 cm long, dark green above, somewhat rugose. Inflorescence a pyramidal cluster to 2.5 dm long. Flowers sterile, white, with rose-pink bracts. Native to China, Korea, and Japan. Probable hardiness to USDA Zone 4. Plants offered result from the 1982 Plant Exploration to Hokkaido and northern Honshu and were grown from seed collected from a plant moved from the wild growing at Hokkaido University Arboretum. Minimum temperature -17 degrees C. Snow cover 1-2 meters per annum.
