Environment description: In stream valley among boulders on a north-facing slope in moist, but well-drained soils. In association with Aconitum sp., ferns, Cornus sp., Kerria japonica, bamboo, sedges, Astilbe sp., Rhododendron sp., and other species.

Multi-stemmed upright deciduous shrub, 2.5 meters tall with prominent tan-brown exfoliating bark; seed are borne in terminal clusters of panicle-like inflorescences with tiny capsules.
