Believed to be from inventory PI 479427 19ncai1 PL at Ames. From the record of NA 82431, received from the same source in 2015: This accession (a single clone?) was reacquired through North Central Regional Plant Introduction Station at Ames, Iowa from the University of New Hampshire at Durham, to whom we distributed material in 1985. In 2007, visiting staff from Ames were impressed by its high performance over most other plants of this species and even other genera, and became interested in evaluating it through the NC-7 Regional Woody Ornamental Trials program. Cuttings were sent to Ames in 2008 and 2009, and plants grown from cuttings of the resulting plants were returned to the USNA in 2015. Our last remaining plants of NA 51058 died several years ago but several other accessions from this expedition continue to grow well. | 2191327 | PI 479427 NA 89017 |

The underlying geology of this area is characterized as Metagraywacke/Mica Schist Formation of the Precambrian-Paleozoic period. (Source: USGS Georgia Geologic Map Data). The soils of this are characterized as Tusquitee Series Loam, 10 to 25 percent slopes. The Tusquitee Series consists of very deep, well drained soils on gently sloping to very steep benches, foot slopes, toe slopes, and fans in coves in the Southern Blue Ridge mountains, MLRA 130B. These soils formed in colluvium derived from materials weathered from igneous and high-grade metamorphic crystalline rocks such as granite, mica gneiss, hornblende gneiss, and schist. Slope ranges from 2 to 95 percent. Solum thickness ranges from 1 to 3+ meters. Reaction is very strongly acid to slightly acid, in the A horizon. The Bw and lower horizons are very strongly acid to moderately acid. In the upper 1 meter, content of rock fragments, dominantly of gravel to stone size, ranges up to 35 percent. Below 1 meter, rock fragment content may range up to 60 percent. Content of mica flakes ranges from few to common. Soils: The area where this species occurs is right on the edge of two soil zones that transition from the river’s edge to mesic conditions upslope. The first is generally referred to as Rock Outcrop. This terrestrial matrix in which plants grow is largely exposed underlying rock geology with accumulated outwash, rock decomposition, and organic debris buildup. The second is Mt. The Porters series consists of deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils on cool, north- to east-facing or shaded ridges and side slopes in the Southern Blue Ridge mountains. These soils formed in residuum, affected by soil creep in the upper part, that has weathered from felsic to mafic, high-grade metamorphic and igneous rocks such as granite, gneiss, hornblende gneiss, mica gneiss, and amphibolite. Slope ranges from 2 to 95 percent. The surface layer to 18cm deep is very dark grayish brown loam; moderate fine and medium granular structure; very friable; many fine roots; few fine mica flakes; slightly acid. From 18 to 90 cm soil range from brown loam with weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure, few mica flakes, and few medium gneiss and quartz fragments that is moderately acid to sandy loam with gneiss saprolite with quartz, weathered feldspar, hornblende, mica and other minerals that is slightly acid and grades into hard rock. Shubuta Member - in western Alabama consists of light-greenish-gray to white plastic fossiliferous, calcareous clay containing irregular calcareous nodules. From the Tombigbee River eastward, the Shubuta becomes more calcareous and grades into massive clayey glauconitic limestone. Eastward from the Alabama River, equivalent beds grade into the Crystal River Formation. Pachuta Marl Member - light-greenish-grey glauconitic, fossiliferous clayey sand and sandy limestone traceable from western Alabama eastward to Covington County where it grades into the Crystal River Formation. Cocoa Sand Member - yellowish-gray firm calcareous, fossiliferous fine to medium sand or sandy limestone or greenish-grey micaceous, calcareous, very clayey sand. Calcareous and clayey sand equivalent to the Cocoa is traceable from western Alabama to the Conecuh River area. (Source: USGS Alabama Geological Map Data). The Saffell Series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in loamy and gravelly marine sediments of the Tertiary Age and have acid reaction. These soils are found on the upper portion of the bluffs along the Alabama River. The Lucy Series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils on uplands. They formed in sandy and loamy marine and fluvial sediments of the Southern Coastal Plain Major Land Resource Area. Soil reaction runs from strongly to moderately acid. The Flomaton Series consists of very deep, excessively drained, rapidly permeable soils on uplands of the Southern Coastal Plain Major Land Resource Area. They formed in gravelly sandy marine sediments and also have an acid reaction. The remainder of soils are of miscellaneous origin. Soils: The underlying geology of this area is the Jackson Group Undifferentiated. The units of the Jackson Group are the Yazoo Clay and Crystal River and Moodys Branch Formations. Descriptions of the members of the Yazoo Clay follow in descending order. | 224 | NA 84575 | LIL' RASPBERRY | Hydrangea serrata (Thunb.) Ser. | | NA | | Not Available | 2017 | | | | | | | Cultivar | Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Hydrangea serrata LIL' RASPBERRY. Layer propagated in 2015 from a plant purchased in 2011 from Gardens Oy Vey. Their catalog description indicated that the plant was probably a named Japanese cultivar that had lost its name, so they gave it the name 'Lil' Raspberry' to sell under. The invoice listed it with the code "hy-hyu-ko", and it does somewhat resemble some photos of a cultivar listed as 'Hyuga-konjo' ['Hyuga konjou', 'Hyuga konjyo']; this is apparently what the nursery suspected its true identity might be. It does not root easily from cuttings and has unusually deep-colored flowers for a Hydrangea serrata, from hot pink to cobalt blue depending on pH, with both fertile and sterile florets being deep in color. | 2153685 | NA 84575 |

This form is somewhat hardier than other forms of H. febrifuga we've grown, so there is a chance it is actually H. x versicolor; however, it has never flowered outdoors, so more definitive identification remains elusive. Someone will probably need to keep a plant in a greenhouse to determine its identity more definitively. -SBL | 2150670 | NA 76331 |
