3PI 705163'Lavacaberry'Rubus hybr.Missouri, United StatesCORNot Available2024DONATED05/09/2024Cultivated materialThe Lavacaberry is a hybrid variety of berry that takes its name from the town of Lavaca (Sebastian County), where it was planted extensively in the 1940s. In 1948, after comparing the Lavaca to samples from the original California berries and the Logan—a blackberry-raspberry hybrid cross—the principle pomologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the Lavaca was a synonym of boysen and, therefore, closely related to the boysenberry. Not being able to establish the correct variety of the berry, the berry growers themselves gave it the name Lavacaberry. https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/lavacaberry-4695/2167448PI 705163

39PI 690344R. hybr. (NC 86-14-1 (R. trivialis) x Glen Prosen)Rubus hybr.North Carolina, United StatesCORNot Available2019DEVELOPED05/16/2019Genetic materialNote from Jim Ballington, Geneticist, North Carolina State University One plant of NC 354 has been shipped. It is a blackberry x red raspberry F1 hybrid. It resulted from crossing NC 86-14-1 (Rubus trivialis) with Glen Prosen (R. idaeus). It is partially-fertile and appears to produce some viable unreduced female gametes. Similar parentage and appearance to 'Ness'. From Jim: "A number of years ago I backcrossed NC 354 to several red raspberry cultivars which resulted in large populations of seedlings. Based on phenotype all these seedlings were triploid, with one exception. The one exception was very weak and highly infertile. So, it appeared at that time that NC 354 mainly produced unreduced female gametes. This spring I have backcrossed NC 354 as a female parent to both 'Navajo' and 'Von' tetraploid erect thornless blackberries and have "some, but not great" drupelet development. I also have selfed a small number of late developing flowers but can't tell if any drupelets from selfing are developing at this time. What makes these crosses interesting to me is that NC 354 is heterozygous for thornlessness (from the male 'Glen Prosen' parent) so I hope I will get enough seed germination to see segregation for thornlessness among the seedlings." Additional info from Jim, 7/29/19 "The cuttings of NC 354 I originally rooted came from a field grown plant and the potted plants I have maintained since have been held outdoors so NC 354 will need to go into a quarantine house where you hold plants that have been exposed to aphids, and in our climate, also leafhoppers." 2091733PI 690344

243PI 679730Mammoth blackberry - BourgeoisRubus hybr.Louisiana, United StatesCORNot Available2014DONATED09/19/2014Cultivated materialSome time after we cleared our lot more than 25 years ago, I noticed a small blackberry looking vine about 18 inches long, about as big around as the cord for a computer mouse or smaller with one large blackberry on it. It was growing in the midst of a patch of dead wild blackberry vines (died from rust, as it was described to me) in a wild hedge I left as a border along the back of our 1 and 1/2 acre yard. Since it was out of the ordinary compared to everything else on the lot, I transplanted it from the back of our lot to a chain link fence just behind our utility room that enclosed a small area in which we initially kept dogs. Since the root system was small and no bigger around than the vine, it seemed that the plant must have been a seedling. No other plant like it has grown anywhere else on our property or around it, and nothing else like it came up where I dug it up. Both the vines and the fruit are very much larger than the native dewberries here, but the rooting tips of the vines lead me to think this may be some sort of blackberry/dewberry hybrid. It has re-sprouted each year from the same spot I transplanted it to 25 years ago. In addition to rooting where the tips of the vines touch the ground, sprouts also come up from the roots a few feet outward from the base of the plant. The flowers are white, many with a pinkish hue to them. The berries are quite large, as you can see from the attached photo. The vines produce large crops, I have never fertilized them and don't tend them, except for removing dead vines each year and training and tying growing vines to supports. They have never contracted any kind of disease. I have given a few young vines to friends and neighbors over the years, all of whom are amazed at the productivity. I measured one trailing vine a few years ago, and it was about 18 feet long. I don't know how long the longest one may have gotten. I have 9 vines now, and I picked 135 lbs. from them this past spring before I gave up. They begin ripening in May. So, perhaps commercial blackberry growers could extend their season by adding these to their crop of later blooming blackberries, unless there already are early blooming blackberries available to them. I freeze them in one gallon freezer bags. Needless to say, the vines do very well in our Louisiana climate. I have never seen dewberry vines of any kind for sale here (raspberries, yes), but one of the previous owners of our property may have bought or dug a specimen somewhere else, perhaps during one of their leisure travels. However, as mentioned, this vine did seem to be a seedling. In looking through the selection of blackberries, raspberries, etc. at Corvallis on your web site, this vine seems similar to, but not exactly like, a blackberry/dewberry hybrid listed as "Mammoth." The cultivar 'Humble' has been reported variously as immune or tolerant to rosette. A breeding program was initiated at Poplarville, Miss. with the objective of breeding thornless cultivars with rosette resistance derived from 'Humble'. A productive rosette resistant plant (MSUS29) was identified from the cross 'Humble' X 'Brazos'. MSUS29 was backcrossed to standard cultivars and thornless cultivars. An elite thornless selection 'Sweetie Pie' (MSUS119) was identified from crosses with the thornless cultivar 'Navaho'. The most recent crosses were made between selections with 'Humble' as the source of rosette resistance and either 'Arapaho' or MSUS119 as the source of thornlessness. It is a challenge to select rosette resistant plants because we have not been able to develop a reliable screening procedure and all seedlings are screened in the field using natural infection. To determine the tendency of 'Humble', 'Brazos', and 'Rosborough' to transmit rosette resistance, we studied its heritability in blackberry. Only 'Humble' transmitted enough resistance to be usable as a parent. We evaluated the effect of rosette on ripening date, yield, and berry weight. Berries ripened about the same time and weighed about the same when grown at either a rosette-free or disease- present location. However, yield was reduced on some clones and not others where rosette was present.1914628PI 672717

279PI 672697'Nettleton's Creamy White'Rubus allegheniensis Porter Illinois, United StatesCORNot Available2013DEVELOPED1999CultivarA new and distinct variety of upright blackberry plant that in all characteristics looks similar to a wild blackberry but is distinct in that the fruit when fully ripened is the color of an almost translucent creamy white and not the reddish purple color of the wild blackberry. The new variety named "Nettleton Creamy White" is an upright plant, is a biennial, thorny, with five leaves per stem along the canes. The berries are produced on the 2.sup.nd year canes and are larger then the standard wild blackberry fruit. The creamy white fruit is medium in size and has a sweet taste to them. The cane and leaves are light to bright green and have the absence of the anthocyanin coloration. ****Note: the patent information below refers to Rubus fruticosus - but the clone really is Rubus allegheniensis. ***** This new variety of Blackberry plant named the `Nettleton Creamy White` is the result of a whole plant spontaneous mutation of the common wild blackberry, Rubus Fruticosus found in Southern Illinois. The plant was found on cultivated land in South Central Illinois (Richland County). The plants of this new variety of erect blackberry plant lack the anthocyanin pigmentation in the plant canes and leaves and the fruit is of a creamy white color when mature, which is unlike the normal purple coloring found in wild or domestic blackberries. This new variety of blackberry is similar to other upright varieties of blackberry cultivars, with the biennial canes with the 1.sup.st year canes going dormant during the wintertime and then in the spring, as second year canes will flower and produce fruit. After the fruit production season, the 2.sup.nd year canes die off. The new variety of upright blackberry has some similarities to the `Clark Gold`, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 14,935, a trailing vine dewberry plant with yellow fruit and the `Kiwigold`, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,313, a red raspberry mutation also with yellow fruit. This new variety of blackberry differs from the `Clark Gold` in that it is an upright cane plant; verses the `Clark Gold` that is a trailing vine cane plant. In addition, the `Clark Gold` as a dewberry flowers and produces fruit in April-May where the new variety flowers and produces fruit in June-July. This new variety of blackberry plant is also distinguished by its cane and leaf coloring. As a new small plant the plant has, a light-green coloring as it grows and matures the green darkens to a bright green, as do the leaves. The 2.sup.nd year canes change color from the bright green to a woody brown color. The standard blackberry, dewberry and boysenberry plants have a red and green coloring running through out the canes and leaves, which is the presence of anthocyanin. The `Nettleton Creamy White` Blackberry does not have this red coloring in it. The flowers are a white color. The berries are a light green and as they mature to a ripened state, they become a creamy white color. The purposed "Nettleton Creamy White" blackberry is to be grown for the purpose of being propagated and sold through various types of outlets to the general public, plant nurseries and possibly food processing companies as well. The fruit is good for eating fresh. To be used in making pies, jams, jellies, preserves or can be made into a juice and can be frozen for later use. 1912556PI 672697

It has clusters of one to three fruits of good quality. Its best known contributions to cultivars are 'Lucretia' and the octopoid 'Austin Mayes', both of which are thought to be R. baileaynus x R. argutus hybrids (Darrow, 1937). The latter was found in Denton County, Texas, about 1880 by John Mayes. A spine-free mutant was discovered later.
It was named 'Austin Thornless'.

345PI 667656'Vintage'Rubus idaeus L. subsp. idaeus Oregon, United StatesCORNot Available2011DEVELOPED2010Genetic materialThe U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station and the Washington Agricultural Research Center announce the release of an outstanding flavored, primocane fruiting red raspberry for the fresh market. VINTAGE, tested as ORUS 2786-5, was selected in Corvallis, Oregon in 2003 from a population grown from open pollinated seed of `Isabel' red raspberry. 'Isabel' is a patented cultivar (PP9,340) developed by Sweetbriar Development, Inc. (Watsonville, CA) that has proprietary selections as parents. VINTAGE is being released primarily due to its outstanding fresh fruit quality, especially flavor and bright color, in a primocane fruiting red raspberry that is suited for the fresh market.

VINTAGE has been evaluated most extensively in trials at Oregon State University's North Willamette Research and Extension Center (Aurora, Ore.; OSU-NWREC) and in USDA-ARS plots in Corvallis, Ore. VINTAGE plants are similarly vigorous to 'Heritage' but the canes tend to be not as stiffly erect or as tall. The canes have prickles that are denser basipetally and tend to be slightly less prickly than `Heritage'. The canes have shown no serious cane diseases.

VINTAGE ripens ahead of `Heritage' but later than `Autumn Bliss', `Chinook', and 'Rafzaqu' ('HimboTop' (R) ). The average harvest date of 5% ripe fruit is around 23-25 August, of 50% ripe fruit is 9-18 September, and of 95% ripe fruit is 7-8 October in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. VINTAGE has yields that are comparable to `Heritage', being slightly less in one trial and slightly greater in another. VINTAGE has consistently produced yields around 1.2-1.9 kg/plant.

VINTAGE fruit are similar in shape to `Heritage' but they are slightly less conical and more rounded. The fruit is attractive, with uniformly sized, shaped, and arranged drupelets. While the fruit are rated as very good for drupelet coherence, they may not hold together as tightly as `Heritage' but they have a comparable firmness. The fruit separate more easily from the plant than those of 'Heritage'. The fruit are medium size (3.2-3.4g) and 20-35% larger than `Heritage'. One of the most outstanding characteristics of VINTAGE is its bright red, attractive color, much brighter and less dark than the fruit of `Heritage'. VINTAGE fresh fruit are very sweet and rate as excellent for flavor, much better than those of `Heritage'.

VINTAGE fruit have a combination of excellent sweetness (soluble solids 12.4-12.8%), moderate pH (3.41-3.45) and a moderate titratable acidity (11.5-11.9) helping to give the fruit a sweet flavor but the lower titratable acidity may prevent it from being a good processing berry. In general the soluble solids and pH are higher than those of `Heritage' and the titratable acidity almost half of those for `Heritage' fruit. The fruit texture when the fruit are eaten is more pleasant, less dry and seedy, than those of `Heritage'.

VINTAGE is introduced as a very sweet, outstanding flavored, bright red, and large primocane fruiting red raspberry with excellent overall quality for the fresh market and yields comparable to current industry standards. VINTAGE should be adapted wherever other primocane fruiting raspberries can be successfully grown.

Open pollinated fruit from the seedlings of the cross of R. glaucus x Cherokee were harvested. In general the seedlings were extremely sterile with 1-5 drupelets per fruit. The resulting population was grown out and this clone selected from that population. The selection was made for superior plant and fruit quality especially for fertile fruit as well as for retaining some of the fruit characteristics of R. glaucus. The plant is fairly erect with very spiny canes. The fruit have good, not perfect fertility, are medium size, and are soft, purplish black, shaped like a typical erect blackberry, with good texture, and excellent, sweet flavor. Very juicy. Has produced offspring in crosses with erect eastern blackberries. - Chad Finn 2009

369PI 658341'Explorer'Rubus occidentalis L. Colorado, United States Historic2009DEVELOPED2004Cultivar'Explorer' was the result of my breeding improvement program for primocane-fruiting black raspberries using the original WS001 black raspberry wild selection as the source of the primocane-fruiting trait. (See NCGR Corvallis Rubus seed accession PI 618559.) In my breeding work, the trait has appeared to be a recessive trait.A patent for 'Explorer' was issued as U.S. Plant Patent #17,727. However, during evaluation trials, 'Explorer' was found to be not self-fruitful and to require an outside pollinator. 'Explorer' is therefore being abandoned as a possible commercial cultivar. The flaw was discovered after the patent had been issued. There will be no further commercialization efforts for this cultivar. (I am in the process of preparing a successor, self-fruitful selection for new trials.)Since I am abandoning 'Explorer', I am submitting the cultivar for your germplasm repository. Although 'Explorer' was (prematurely) patented, I am permitting you to freely distribute cloned material. -Peter H. Tallman October 5, 2009

409PI 654994'Onyx'Rubus hybr.Oregon, United StatesCORNot Available2008DONATED04/29/2008Cultivarhttp://hortsci.ashspublications.org/content/46/4/657.full ‘Onyx’ is a new trailing blackberry (Rubus subg. Rubus Watson) cultivar from the U.S. Department of Agriculture–Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) breeding program in Corvallis, OR, released in cooperation with the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. ‘Onyx’ is a vigorous, somewhat erect, thorny, trailing blackberry that produces moderate yields of uniform, firm, and sweet high quality fruit with excellent flavor that are suited for the local and wholesale fresh market. ‘Onyx’ is being released primarily as a result of its outstanding fresh fruit quality in the late season.

‘Onyx’, tested as ORUS 1523-4, was selected in Corvallis, OR, in 1997 from a cross made in 1995 of OSC 1466 and ORUS 1117-11. OSC 1466 was selected in 1966 and has always been noted for its productivity and outstanding fruit quality, especially flavor, but its fruit are small. ORUS 1117-11 is a thornless selection with high yields of late-ripening fruit with excellent quality. ‘Onyx’ is being released primarily as a result of its outstanding fresh fruit quality in the late season.

https://patents.google.com/patent/USPP22358P2/en Description and specifications of a new and distinct blackberry cultivar which originated from seed produced by a hand pollinated cross of OSC 1466 (non-patented)×ORUS 1117-11 (non-patented) is provided. This new trailing blackberry cultivar can be distinguished by its high yields, large fruit size, excellent fresh fruit quality, mid-late season fruit ripening, and healthy plants.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to the discovery of a new and distinct cultivar of blackberry hybrid plant botanically know as a Rubus subgenus Rubus hybrid and herein referred to as ‘ONYX’, as herein described and illustrated.

The new and distinct cultivar of blackberry originated from a hand pollinated cross of OSC 1466 (non-patented)×ORUS 1117-11 (non-patented).

Plants and fruit of this new cultivar differ phenotypically from its parents. The new cultivar is later ripening and larger in fruit size than the female parent OSC 1466 (non-patented) and has firmer, more uniformly shaped fruit than the male parent ORUS 1117-11 (non-patented). The new cultivar also has thorny canes, unlike the ORUS 1117-11 (non-patented) parent. The new cultivar has higher yields of firmer fruit than either of the parent blackberries. Although blackberries (Rubus subgenus Rubus) are highly heterogeneous and outcrossing, and most clones contain genes from more than one species, the new cultivar and its progenitor lines phenotypically exhibit characters predominately of the trailing western United States species, Rubus ursinus Cham et. Schltdl. (western trailing blackberry). Rubus idaeus L., (red raspberry), R. armeniacus Focke (Himalaya blackberry). R. baileyanus Britton, and R. argutus Link Porter (highbush blackberry) can all be found in the pedigree of this new cultivar.

The seeds resulting from this controlled hybridization were germinated in a greenhouse in the winter of 1995 and planted in a field in Corvallis, Oreg. in the spring. The seedlings fruited during the summer of 1997 and one, designated ORUS 1523-4, was selected for its mid-late season ripening, large fruit size, excellent fruit quality, and excellent plant health.

During 1997, the original plant selection was propagated asexually from dormant, hardwood cane cuttings from the above noted location. An observational plot of 3 plants was established at the above noted location and at Aurora, Oreg. in the spring of 1998. Subsequently, larger replicated plantings were established Aurora, Oreg. with asexually multiplied plants.

The new cultivar has been asexually multiplied annually since 1997 by the use of cane cuttings. The new cultivar was established in vitro from a cane cutting and microcuttings have been taken and rooted from this sort of culture. During all asexual multiplication, the characteristics of the original plant have been maintained and no aberrant phenotypes have appeared.

Test plantings over a wide geographic area have shown this new cultivar to be adapted to differing soil and climatic conditions although it is best adapted to Mediterranean type climates where trailing blackberries are typically grown.

Plants of the new cultivar are vigorous and prolific and establish well after planting. Primocanes and floricanes have typical trailing blackberry growth habit. The plants are thorny with size and density of thorns being less than ‘Marion’ (non-patented) at the base, comparable at midpoint, and more thorny at the terminus. The primocanes emerge and grow vertically for 30-60 cm before arching to the ground and growing along the ground. Primocanes are typically lifted and tied onto a trellis system and after going through the dormant period break bud, flower and fruit as floricanes. Plants show no particular susceptibility to anthracnose [Elsinoe veneta (Burkh.) Jenkins], septoria (Septoria rubi Westend), cane blight (Leptosphaeria coniothyrium ([Fuckel] Sacc.) spur blight (Didymella applanata [Niessl] Sacc.), and purple blotch (Septocyta ruborum [Lib.] Petr.) nor have they tested positive for Raspberry bushy dwarf virus. The bloom period of the new cultivar averages 4-5 days later than the ‘Marion’ (non-patented) and 8-11 days later than ‘Black Diamond’ (non-patented).

Fruit of the new cultivar begin ripening 19 days later than ‘Siskiyou’ (non-patented) and 9 days later than ‘Marion’ (non-patented). The average harvest date of 5% ripe fruit is 9 July, of 50% ripe fruit is 16 July, and 1 August for 95% ripe fruit in the Willamette Valley of Oregon and the midpoint of harvest is 7 days later than for ‘Marion’ (non-patented). Fruit yields of the new cultivar are usually around 14, 309 kg/hectare (6.39 tons/acre) and are comparable to those for ‘Marion’ (non-patented). Yields are consistent from year to year.

The fruit is conical, with very uniformly sized, shaped and arranged drupelets giving the fruit a very uniform, attractive shape. The fruit are bright glossy black. The fruit is medium large (6.1 g) and typically 1 g larger than ‘Marion’ (non-patented) and 0.5 g smaller than ‘Siskiyou’ (non-patented). The new cultivar maintains a uniform fruit size throughout the harvest season. The new cultivar exhibits excellent fruit fertility with full drupelet set in contrast to ‘Siskiyou’ (non-patented), which can have poorly set fruit tips; it also has much better drupelet set than ‘Marion’ (non-patented). The fruit is firm at maturity, rating much higher than ‘Marion’ (non-patented) and comparable to ‘Metolius’ (non-patented) and ‘Siskiyou’ (non-patented).

The fresh fruit rates very good in flavor, being comparable to ‘Obsidian’ (non-patented), ‘Metolius’ (non-patented), and ‘Kotata’ (non-patented) but slightly lower than ‘Marion’ (non-patented) or ‘Siskiyou’ (non-patented). The flavor is sweet with a nice acidic balance with aroma typical of western blackberries. The fruit texture is comparable to ‘Marion’ (non-patented), ‘Metolius’ (non-patented), ‘Obsidian’ (non-patented), and ‘Siskiyou’ (non-patented) and the seeds are much less noticeable than in ‘Chester Thornless’ (non-patented) and ‘Ouachita’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 17,162). The soluble solids concentration averages 13.7% on shiny black fruit, similar to ‘Marion’ (non-patented) (13.3%) and lower than ‘Navaho’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 6,679), (15.6%). Dry seed weight averages 3.28 mg/seed, and seeds are smaller than those of ‘Marion’ (non-patented) and ‘Black Diamond’ (non-patented) (each 3.95 mg seed).

Fruit clusters are medium-long (similar to ‘Marion’ (non-patented)), cymose, and are mostly borne on the periphery of the plant canopy, providing easy access to harvest. Flower fertility is high and clusters are well filled.

The new cultivar has been named the ONYX cultivar.

Leaf morphology was also intermediate. While R. leucodermis primocane leaves are typically ternate, occasionally with extra lobes on the back of the rear two leaves varying to palmate with five leaflets. R. strigosus occasionally has ternate primocane leaves or more commonly, five to seven pinnate leaflets. Leaves on this plant typically had seven leaflets, with the rear four originating from a single point (as seen in leucodermis but NOT strigosus) and the forward three being normal in orientation. Some leaves on the plant had five pinnate leaflets as seen commonly in R. strigosus. Plant was vigorus and had many inflorescences. Few of these had set fruit, however, and those that had were poorly set with only a few druplets each. Fruit reddish purplish, intermediate in color between leucodermis and strigosus. A second plant with similar intermediate morphology and even fewer fruit was observed a few miles away at lower elevation, near the base of the road and it's intersection with FR-2200, growing with R. strigosus and R. leucodermis both within a 15 foot radius and suggesting the presence of more hybrids in this area.- Michael Dossett 02/01/20081750539PI 653403
