Narrative
ORUS 4273-2 is a hybrid of Ouachita x ORUS 1880-1 [Rubus georgicus 824 (17-14) x Cherokee] and so is ¼ Rubus georgicus and 3/4 University of Arkansas erect blackberry germplasm. It is remarkable for its very early ripening fruit (slightly ahead of ‘Osage’), high yields, and excellent plant vigor. The fruit are medium-large, black, well formed, and firm. The seeds are large like most erect blackberries. The flavor is good. While thorny, the plant should be heterozygous for Merton Thornlessness – Tt. Bottom line is a good breeding parent with significant new germplasm (R. georgicus) in it to help broaden germplasm pools.
