Select the tab for the type of search. Each tab has everything you need to do to perform that type of search.

(Results of more than 500 will not return images.)

This search will show only accessions that have material that may be requested, including those not seasonally available.
You may list accessions with separators (commas or semicolons, as shown below) or by entering them on separate lines, such as

Fernald (1901) states that there are numerous intermediate forms of M. x media where no constant characters exist making separation from M. fistulosa difficult. According to Whitten (1981), M. clinopodia (mesic wooded slopes) and M. didyma (rich, moist woodlands; streambanks; seepage areas) are adapted to different soil moisture conditions. M. x media tends to be found in habitats more similar to M. didyma , but not as moist. This accession was collected from naturally occurring specimens in Carter Co., TN and may potentially include genetics of both F1 hybrids and possibly backcrosses. Flower color for this taxon is extremely variable and is clearly noted across the five specimens sampled for this accession: Sample #01: hot purple (Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) color charts N74A-N74B). Sample #02: hot reddish-purple (RHS 71D). Sample #03: lower lip of corolla light purple-pink (RHS 76B) with numerous tiny purple spots and upper lip darker purple-pink (RHS 76B). Sample #04: light pink (RHS 76B-76C) with tiny purple spots on lower lip. Sample #05: deep, dark hot red (RHS 64A-64B). The middle lobes of the lower lip is extended and positioned at circa a 90 degree angle on majority of the specimens sampled. This population peaked flower and fruit in nature 10 July and 21 September (2020), respectively.2107742Ames 35579

Majority of specimens noted at collection site in nature were approximately 3-5 days past peak flower on 10 June 2019 with seeds reaching maturity approximately 55 days later. Majority of specimens observed were approximately 10" in height. Very healthy, dark-green leaves that maintained quality throughout the season (observed mid-August 2019). 2092645Ames 34609
106Ames 34610JDC/MB/2019/015/894Monarda brevis (Fosberg & Artz) Floden West Virginia, United StatesNC7SHOOT2019Wild materialMany genets noted at collection site in nature consisted of 25-30 stems, but individual stems are widely spaced (e.g. 1-5") apart compared to other populations (four) noted (2019 reconnaisance) where stem spacing was typically observed at 0.25-0.5" apart. Very healthy, dark-green leaves noted in early/mid June, but leaf quality greatly declined when observed in mid-August in contrast to other populations observed in nature that seemed to maintain leaf quality throughout the season. Many plants at this site were defoliated likely due to disease (leaf spot) or tattered likely due to possible insect feeding. Specimens noted were circa 10-12 days from initiation of flowering on 12 June 2019 and during mid-August a few specimens were still observed flowering with about 10-20% of infructescences were still green. The overall phenology of this M. brevis population at this site is quite different in comparison to other populations (four) observed in 2019, with flowering being much later (e.g. 10-25 days); leaf quality lower; and synchronization of flowering extremely variable within genets of this population. 2092646Ames 34610

Iowa, United StatesNC7SEED2009COLLECTED1995Numerous samples originally acquired from native prairie remnants within the northern section of three tiers of counties located in Iowa. A total of 14 sites were sampled representing 12 counties including Cerro Gordo (2 sites), Kossuth, Emmet, Palo Alto, Dickinson (2 sites), Humboldt, Wright, Chickasaw, Winneshiek, Sioux, Bremer, and Floyd. Wild materialWild bergamot is a native, perennial forb that grows 2-5 feet tall. The stems are square, branched or unbranched, smooth and somewhat hairy toward the top. The leaves on short petioles are opposite; each pair is at right angles to the adjacent pair. Individual leaves are somewhat oval in shape, 2.5 x 1 inches, but narrowed and pointed toward the tip. Margins are unevenly toothed. Both leaves and stems have a minty aroma and a gray-green color that may be tinged with purple. The root system is a clump of fibrous rootlets and rhizomes. Flowers are slender pink to lavender tubes, each with a distinct lip or tube. Fruits are 4 nutlets, 1/32 inch in diameter, enclosed by a persistent calyx. Uses include roadside and wildlife plantings, prairie creations and restorations, landscaping, and for increasing plant diversity in prairie communities. This Northern Iowa Eco-zone Germplasm represents materials collected in remnant prairies from the northern one-third of counties in Iowa. Materials were then regenerated by bulking samples at the University of Northern Iowa Tallgrass Prairie Center, Cedar Falls, IA where plots were separated via distance of circa 1,500 feet from other M. fistulosa plots. Germplasm was regenerated again at the USDA Elsberry Plant Materails Center in Elsberry, MO following the same isolation protocol of 1,500 feet.1794075Ames 29844
