First published by Willdenow (1809), Monarda x media is a taxon of hybrid origin representing a variable group of plants resembling M. didyma with intermediate characters of M. fistulosa and/or M. clinopodia. Fernald (1901) states that there are numerous intermediate forms of M. x media where no constant characters exist making separation from M. fistulosa difficult. According to Whitten (1981), M. clinopodia (mesic wooded slopes) and M. didyma (rich, moist woodlands; streambanks; seepage areas) are adapted to different soil moisture conditions. M. x media tends to be found in habitats more similar to M. didyma , but not as moist. This accession was collected from naturally occurring specimens in Carter Co., TN and may potentially include genetics of both F1 hybrids and possibly backcrosses. Flower color for this taxon is extremely variable and is clearly noted across the five specimens sampled for this accession: Sample #01: hot purple (Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) color charts N74A-N74B). Sample #02: hot reddish-purple (RHS 71D). Sample #03: lower lip of corolla light purple-pink (RHS 76B) with numerous tiny purple spots and upper lip darker purple-pink (RHS 76B). Sample #04: light pink (RHS 76B-76C) with tiny purple spots on lower lip. Sample #05: deep, dark hot red (RHS 64A-64B). The middle lobes of the lower lip is extended and positioned at circa a 90 degree angle on majority of the specimens sampled. This population peaked flower and fruit in nature 10 July and 21 September (2020), respectively.
