The USNA SSR DNA study grouped this with an assemblage consisting primarily of all wild-collected Japanese material, all tetraploids, as well as the dwarfs in the 'Tide Hill' group (also tetraploids). These correspond with accessions that were previously (mis)labeled as Buxus microphylla, Buxus microphylla var. japonica, and Buxus sinica var. insularis. 65NA 85025'Tide Hill'Buxus sp.NANot Available2023CultivarFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Buxus riparia 'Tide Hill'. Previously unrecorded plant at the very west-southwest tip of bed AC-J-N-2 in the Asian Collections, where the steps from the GCA Circle meet the path leading to the parking lot. It is a dwarf form akin to 'Tide Hill', 'Frierson's Compact', and 'Rococo'/'Franklin's Gem'/'Nana'/'Betler' and is almost certainly tetraploid. Possibly from Kingsville Nursery; see also NA 29693 and 34738 for earlier accessions of this type.) -SBL Form received: unknown propagule type.2157834NA 85025
66NA 82758NA 82758Buxus microphylla Siebold & Zucc. NANot Available2023Uncertain improvement statusFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Buxus microphylla. Two plants in the collection that had been (mis)labeled as 51896*L and 51896*T but are morphologically very different from original plants NA 51896*H and 51896*J, Buxus sempervirens [formerly B. wallichiana]; genetic testing showed 51896*L to belong to B. microphylla var. japonica, and it was found to be a tetraploid using flow cytometry. The now-dead 51896*P also probably belonged to this accession. The earliest check note for 51896*T, a later propagation of the same vintage as 51896*L and 51896*P, indicated that it had been labeled B. harlandii in the lath before being changed to this. This plant material obviously belongs to another accession, but the number of that accession is not known and was not discovered during genetic tests. It clustered closely with NA 82660, Buxus sinica collected by Richard Olsen in China. -SBL Form received: unknown propagule type.2153036NA 82758

In molecular testing it grouped with two probable B. harlandii hybrids, and was shown via flow cytometry to be triploid. -SBL Form received: unknown propagule type.2153031NA 82749
68NA 82675NA 82675Buxus sempervirens L. NANot Available2023Uncertain improvement statusFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Buxus sempervirens. Plant of uncertain identity and origin growing in Boxwood Collection bed LL (BOX-LL); assigned the provisional/temporary internal letters "LL-a" for the 2015 Buxus genetic diversity SSR study. According to Lynn Batdorf, plants from Skip March's trips and other sources that were present in the lath house at the time Bed LL was constructed (late 1980s or early 1990s) would be the theoretical source of this plant. There was already no label at that time, but it was thought too interesting not to keep. Form received: unknown propagule type.2153003NA 82675

Six old, more or less identical-looking plants are growing in beds AZ-MO-NW and AZ-MO-SW just above the upper wall of the Morrison Garden; they do not appear to have been documented previously. Three plants of each are evenly spaced along the wall in both beds, and the plants are taller than wide. They appear typical at first glance, but multiple plants have occasional sprigs with variegation suggesting 'Argenteovariegata'. It is possible that they were originally this cultivar, but have mostly reverted to green. Most of the plants are looking fairly sparse.2191635NA 89106

Seibert of Longwood Gardens, who obtained the plant in 1956 from Mrs E. W. Seibert; she had gotten her plant from Mr Nick Bassler, a nurseryman near Belleville, Illinois in 1931. The original plant was said to be located 0.5 miles south of Scott Air Force Base on Route 2 in Belleville, Illinois, just east of St. Louis, Missouri. The plant was noted for its unusual cold hardiness in that location, with green winter foliage and no winter injury in 1962-63, when all other boxwood were damaged. Rooted cuttings received by through USNA intern Jacob Suissa; regarding this material, Dr Starett writes: "I received this plant as a "trial plant" from a nursery that has since gone out of business. They did not provide me with its parentage. The original boxwood plant is in my front yard on the southwest side of my house here in Burlington, VT with no protection from winter wind or sun. It has never showed any signs of scorch/scald. On campus we have boxwoods with spidermites, psyllids, leafminer, etc and none have bothered this plant (which I also have planted on campus). After a -20F winter this year, please see the attached photo I took this morning. The plant behind it is an emerald arborvitae [=Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd'] and you can see that the boxwood is nearly as tall as it and the eave of my house! I have never pruned this plant other than to take some cuttings which all rooted very well. It has grown nearly 8 feet in approximately 15 years. I was hoping that Richard Olsen might have some ideas about its parentage and that is why I gave those plants to the National Arboretum." Form received: rooted cutting.2153956NA 85001

South Dakota, United StatesNAFLOWER2006DEVELOPEDCloneA ten year field trial evaluating 380 Buxus seedlings in Brookings, South Dakota was executed by Norman Evers (McCrory Gardens South Dakota State University). The goal of the trial was to identify superior selections based on hardiness, growth habit, vigor, and both winter and summer foliage color. Winter color of Buxus in South Dakota is the most limiting factor. All seedlings trialed were found to be winter hardy with no dieback or outright death. Growth habits were only slightly varied. After ten years, the average spread and height was 91.4 cm and 45.0 cm, respectively. Out of 380 seedlings, 379 exhibited undesirable winter color while one, 95S01, had excellent winter color (somewhat emerald green with a hint of bronze). This accession is hardy to USDA cold hardiness zone 4 and exhibits a small, compact stature. 1702289NA 86734

NANot Available1995Uncertain improvement statusFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Buxus koreana (seedling selection). This plant appears to have been relocated from the center Holly Nursery around 1995; it was located in row 21C (near a group of Taxus and Cephalotaxus) and was listed on the inventory as "Buxus macrophylla [sic] (sdlg sd. spd. habit, seed Miller)"; it was apparently a seedling with spreading habit, received from seed given to Eisenbeiss by Carl Ferris Miller (Chollipo Arboretum) who was also the source of a number of numbered Ilex selections in the old nursery attributed to "Miller" on the Eisenbeiss inventories. The plant was 2 feet in height and 5 feet in spread at the time of the nursery renovation, and was slated to be transplanted to the Boxwood Collection according to a printed action spreadsheet from that time. The results of the USNA SSR analysis confirmed that it belongs in Buxus koreana (syn. B. sinica var. insularis), and it is all but certain that this would have been collected either from the wild or cultivation in Korea. -SBL2150306NA 75263

The USNA SSR study showed this to belong in a group of triploid B. microphylla var. japonica, and flow cytometry determined it as triploid, so it is B. microphylla, probably var. japonica (as far as that taxon is valid.) -SBL2146400NA 57950

The USNA molecular study placed this in a cluster with NA 33827-H ('Ed Wyckoff') far apart from any other B. sempervirens, near a group of tetraploid B. sinica var. insularis ("'Nana' group"). This may be a hybrid involving one of this class. This accession was also found to be triploid using flow cytometry, as was 'Ed Wyckoff'. On physical review, it was determined that this accession actually is 'Ed Wyckoff'; it will then be removed after propagation of the better-documented accession of that name. -SBL]2146401NA 57953

It looks totally unlike the 'japonica' that you wrote Dr. Baldwin thinks is 'sinica'. The plants growing rankly and almost wild at Gray Summit are B. m. 'sinica' according to Mr. Barbre and Mr. Bagby. We have tried cuttings and they have not rooted well. We also have seedlings out at Gray Summit. Would you like to see one?"; x 3/21/72 Mary A. Gamble to P. E. Mihan: "We are now convinced that the B. m. sinica plants were grown from seed sent from China but in 1921, not in 1948. There was a seed shipment from the Sun-Yat Sen Garden in the latter year but no record of plants reaching the arboretum from the Garden where they were propagated. Several thousand seedlings from the 1921 shipment were grown, then rogued down to about 100. These were set out at Gray Summit and we saw the survivors last week. They were blooming like mad and smelled like honeysuckle; bees were thick about them. They were a lively bright green, quite light in tone; they were rather sparse of foliage and not particularly handsome, but quite interesting. They look completely unlike Dr. Baldwin's sinica seedling, for example. Seedlings of all sizes are around the group of parent plants; they appear prolific. We are moving two of the mature plants to the Anderson Garden."; x 4/20/72 Skip G. March to Mary A. Gamble, Boxwood Nursery Report. [The first test used in the USNA SSR molecular study placed this with B. microphylla, raising further questions about its origins. However, the second test grouped it with B. sinica var. insularis; this difference was missed initially, and further study of this material is recommended in order to make the ID more certain. However, it does not appear typical of B. microphylla, so there may be something to the study results. -SBL]2144441NA 34197

Varifolia' I have had in my collection for many years but cannot recall source from where it came from, however, among a collection of Buxus I received from Hillier, _Buxus latifolia maculata_ is so identical I have felt they are one and same. It is a fine Buxus. Buxus over the years have come to me from number of sources and it is difficult to keep record up-to-date. Recall Dr. Wyman sent me a group he had received, I believe from England, and knowing my interest in Buxus, in turn sent them me." The USNA Boxwood SSR study clustered this with 'Decussata' (now Buxus sp.) 51902-H between B. sempervirens/insularis/microphylla hybrids and B. sinica/harlandii; the sample is probably not true B. sempervirens, but at what might be going on? The study by Van Laere et al placed 'Varifolia' with 'Marginata', safely within B. sempervirens; their material may have been misidentified. -SBL2144145NA 29706

The USNA Boxwood SSR study found that this accession clustered with NA 30313 (presumed correct 'Green Pillow'), but was not entirely indistinguishable. It did group indistinguishably with NA 17091, recorded as 'Myosotidifolia'. We need to determine if the differences are significant or if all three accessions are 'Green Pillow'. -SBL2143205NA 7043

For letter 12/13/71 H. T. Skinner to B. L. Wagenknecht, see NA 29692 dated 8/31/67. Text from the latter correspondence: "2. 'Kingsville buxifolia' - On advice of Henry Hohman, this has been used by "others" for his _B. microphylla_ 'Compacta'. It should perhaps be listed as a synonym." [USNA SSR data appears to show this accession (based on 4899-J) is not genetically identical to NA 29806 (based on 269806-P), which came directly from Kingsville Nursery. If the history is correct, then either the cultivar is not genetically uniform, or one of the two is not correctly identified. -SBL]2143169NA 4899

The USNA Boxwood SSR study found that this accession does not cluster immediately with probable true 'Green Pillow' (NA 30313); instead, it appears to be indistinguishable from NA 7042, Buxus microphylla (Kingsville), and is renamed to match this genetic reality for recordkeeping purposes. These two accessions may represent an unnamed selection from Kingsville Nurseries. -SBL2143122NA 4201

418NA 4207'Macrophylla'Buxus sempervirens L. NANot Available1952CultivarFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Buxus sempervirens 'Macrophylla'. This clone is somewhat of a mystery; it does not appear to be widely known (it is notably absent from the listings in Boxwood: An Illustrated Encyclopedia, which instead erroneously lists it as a synonym of the species Buxus macrophylla.) The plant appears to be related to the 'Pyramidalis'/'Fastigiata' group by habit, and falls within that group according to DNA analysis. It is not closely related to the 'Latifolia' group or to the clone 'Latifolia Macrophylla'. Its leaves have been measured at 26-29 mm long and 12 mm wide. Per letter from Dr. Henry T. Skinner to Burdette L. Wagenknecht (registrar for Buxus) dated December 13, 1971, "This clone derives from the Morris Arboretum and is believed to have origin in a shipment from Hillier's Nurseries in England. As such, it may be identifiable with 'Latifolia Macrophylla' registered in 1965. Pending determination to the contrary, we would not be inclined to list it "as is"."-SBL2143124NA 4207

422NA 4213NA 4213Buxus sempervirens L. NANot Available1952Cultivated materialFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Buxus sempervirens. Because the plant that is currently still labeled (with a very old tag) as NA 4213 / 350-35 [old Arnold Arboretum number] is in exactly the same location it was mapped in 1960, it is presumed to be the material that was originally received with this information and assigned NA 4213. This is clearly not the true Arnold Arboretum 350-35, which is a 'Suffruticosa'-like clone; genetically, this accession is close to 'Vardar Valley' but somewhat distinct from it. The plant itself is extremely similar to 'Vardar Valley' and would be difficult if not impossible to distinguish the two morphologically. -SBL2143128NA 4213
423NA 4223NA 4223Buxus microphylla Siebold & Zucc. NANot Available1952Cultivated materialFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Buxus microphylla. The name long used for this accession, "Buxus sempervirens /B.M. Recondlost/", was created by mistaken interpretation of the name that accompanied it from its prior source; "B.M. Recondlost" was a mistake for "B. m. record lost" was almost certainly meant as a shorthand for a Buxus microphylla with a lost record. The lone accession to which this name was applied does match Buxus microphylla var. japonica, morphologically; it also grouped with that species in molecular testing using SSR markers (more specifically with 'Morris Dwarf'), and it was shown to be triploid using flow cytometry. -SBL. All eight accessions [plants?] were monitored in a 2002 leafminer study conducted by the U of MD, Dept. of Entomology, Dr. Raupp. [The USNA Boxwood SSR study placed this in a group of B. microphylla (probably var. microphylla) accessions, and it clustered most closely with NA 7027, 'Morris Dwarf'. Since these two accessions are very different in habit, it is possible that one sported from the other and they are almost identical, genetically. -SBL]2143132NA 4223
