Narrative
Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Buxus 'Varifolia'. Ref. letter, from Henry Hohman to H. T. Skinner dated 8/4/1971 (with NA 33822-33828 records): "Buxus semp. Varifolia' I have had in my collection for many years but cannot recall source from where it came from, however, among a collection of Buxus I received from Hillier, _Buxus latifolia maculata_ is so identical I have felt they are one and same. It is a fine Buxus. Buxus over the years have come to me from number of sources and it is difficult to keep record up-to-date. Recall Dr. Wyman sent me a group he had received, I believe from England, and knowing my interest in Buxus, in turn sent them me." The USNA Boxwood SSR study clustered this with 'Decussata' (now Buxus sp.) 51902-H between B. sempervirens/insularis/microphylla hybrids and B. sinica/harlandii; the sample is probably not true B. sempervirens, but at what might be going on? The study by Van Laere et al placed 'Varifolia' with 'Marginata', safely within B. sempervirens; their material may have been misidentified. -SBL
