Narrative
A ten year field trial evaluating 380
Buxus
seedlings in Brookings, South Dakota was executed by Norman Evers (McCrory Gardens South Dakota State University). The goal of the trial was to identify superior selections based on hardiness, growth habit, vigor, and both winter and summer foliage color. Winter color of
Buxus
in South Dakota is the most limiting factor. All seedlings trialed were found to be winter hardy with no dieback or outright death. Growth habits were only slightly varied. After ten years, the average spread and height was 91.4 cm and 45.0 cm, respectively. Out of 380 seedlings, 379 exhibited undesirable winter color while one, 95S01, had excellent winter color (somewhat emerald green with a hint of bronze). This accession is hardy to USDA cold hardiness zone 4 and exhibits a small, compact stature.
