Narrative
Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Buxus sp.. Rooted cuttings received by through USNA intern Jacob Suissa; regarding this material, Dr Starett writes: "I received this plant as a "trial plant" from a nursery that has since gone out of business. They did not provide me with its parentage. The original boxwood plant is in my front yard on the southwest side of my house here in Burlington, VT with no protection from winter wind or sun. It has never showed any signs of scorch/scald. On campus we have boxwoods with spidermites, psyllids, leafminer, etc and none have bothered this plant (which I also have planted on campus). After a -20F winter this year, please see the attached photo I took this morning. The plant behind it is an emerald arborvitae [=Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd'] and you can see that the boxwood is nearly as tall as it and the eave of my house! I have never pruned this plant other than to take some cuttings which all rooted very well. It has grown nearly 8 feet in approximately 15 years. I was hoping that Richard Olsen might have some ideas about its parentage and that is why I gave those plants to the National Arboretum." Form received: rooted cutting.
