The broadly branching, rounded crown may reach a width of 13 ft. Plants can spread vegetatively from horizontal lower limbs that root where they contact moist ground (known as layering). Flat-topped clusters of small white flowers appear from April until June while the white berry-like fruit are present over summer and may persist into fall. Young twigs are yellow-green in spring and summer, turning red by late summer and fall. The bark of older limbs is grey or brown. 'Mason' was selected as the best performer in a common garden study of 56 redosier dogwood clones and three cultivars evaluated at the USDA NRCS Corvallis Plant Materials Center, Corvallis, OR from 1985 to 1989. It was chosen for its rapid growth rate, greater plant vigor, higher stem density, and better foliage appearance (fewer disease and insect signs and symptoms, but not necessarily greater pest resistance). Potential use in bank stabilization along streams of low velocity, wildlife food and habitat, and for environmental improvements west of the Cascade Mountains in Oregon, Washington and northern California. 1435318PI 540382

Evaluated at the Big Flats PMC alongside 42 other accessions from the northeastern United States. 'Ruby' was selected for its outstanding layering ability, geen stems in summer followed by bright red stems in fall/winter, white flowers and cream colored fruits and its uniform, rounded growth habit. Shrub to 6-10 feet with ascending outside stems. Useful for steambank protection due to the tendancy for side branches to root by layering. It preforms best on soils that are moist, somewhat poorly drained, moderately acidic to neutral, and in areas that have medium to coarse textured soils. It is tolerant to some shade but not to droughty conditions. Originally obtained in 1975 from a single, native plant growing near Painted Post, NY.1338165PI 443229

Slope: 0 percent. Aspect: North. The underlying geology of this area is characterized as Citronelle Formation of the Pliocene period. The Citronelle Formation is widespread in the Gulf Coastal Plain. The type section for the Citronelle Formation, named by Matson (1916), is near Citronelle, Alabama. The Citronelle Formation grades laterally, through a broad facies transition, into the Miccosukee Formation of the eastern Florida panhandle. Coe (1979) investigated the Citronelle Formation in portions of the western Florida panhandle. The Citronelle Formation is a siliciclastic, deltaic deposit that is lithologically similar to, and time equivalent with, the Cypresshead Formation and, at least in part, the Long Key Formation (Cunningham et al., 1998) of the peninsula. In the western panhandle, some of the sediments mapped as Citronelle Formation may be reworked Citronelle. The lithologies are the same and there are few fossils present to document a possible younger age. The Citronelle Formation consists of gray to orange, often mottled, unconsolidated to poorly consolidated, very fine to very coarse, poorly sorted, clean to clayey sands. It contains significant amounts of clay, silt and gravel which may occur as beds and lenses and may vary considerably over short distances. Limonite nodules and limonite-cemented beds are common. Marine fossils are rare but fossil pollen, plant remains and occasional vertebrates are found. Much of the Citronelle Formation is highly permeable. It forms the Sand and Gravel Aquifer of the surficial aquifer system contain organics. The dominant fossils in the freshwater carbonates are mollusks. (Source: USGS Florida Geologic Map Data). The soils of this are characterized as Troup Series loamy sand, 0 to 5 percent slopes. The Troup series consists of very deep, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in unconsolidated sandy and loamy marine sediments. Troup soils are on ridges and hillslopes. Slopes predominantly range from 0 to 15 percent but range to 45 percent. The soil pH is generally strongly acid. There is no mention of the unusual stem growth in its description, but NA 35276 (C. alba x C. sp., PI-367881, collected by John Creech from Timirazov Ag. Plants from each population were combined together in order to acheive a successful seed increase as the genetic diversity within each original accession was not sufficient (strong self-incompatibility). Round-leaf dogwood is typically noted as a woodland shrub that has a high tolerance to shading, but prefers well-drained yet moist soils. Round-leaf dogwood is native to most of the northeastern US west to the Minnesota/North Dakota border south to very rare, disjunct populations in central Iowa. Genetics of this accession would represent the extreme southwestern edge of the species native range. 2158817Ames 36172

The underlying geology of this area is the Jackson Group undifferentiated. The units of the Jackson Group are the Yazoo Clay and Crystal River and Moodys Branch Formations. Descriptions of the members of the Yazoo Clay follow in descending order. Shubuta Member - in western Alabama consists of light-greenish-gray to white plastic fossiliferous, calcareous clay containing irregular calcareous nodules. From the Tombigbee River eastward, the Shubuta becomes more calcareous and grades into massive clayey glauconitic limestone. Eastward from the Alabama River, equivalent beds grade into the Crystal River Formation. Pachuta Marl Member - light-greenish-grey glauconitic, fossiliferous clayey sand and sandy limestone traceable from western Alabama eastward to Covington County where it grades into the Crystal River Formation. Cocoa Sand Member - yellowish-gray firm calcareous, fossiliferous fine to medium sand or sandy limestone or greenish-grey micaceous, calcareous, very clayey sand. Calcareous and clayey sand equivalent to the Cocoa is traceable from western Alabama to the Conecuh River area. Wild materialPlants observed in nature were single and multi-stemmed, deciduous, shrubs to small trees with a central leader and strongly horizontal branching (pagoda-like) framework. Plants generally 2.5-5 meters tall with a spread of 3-8 meters. The leaves of the plants observed are simple, alternate, and clustered toward the branch tips on short internodes, resulting in a whorled appearance. Vigorous suckers emerging from basal stems or out of the ground display the typical alternate-leaved character of this species very prominently. Leaves are medium to dark green and glabrous on the upper surface and gray-green to greenish-white on the lower surface. Leaf shape ranges from broadly elliptic to ovate with 4–6 pairs of pinnate primary nerves and acuminate apices. Approximately 10-25 fruit are borne on flat to hemispheric branched inflorescences; pedicels of the fruit range from yellow-green in flower to red when fruit mature. Fruit range in size from 4-10 mm in diameter. Developing fruit are green, eventually changing color to a tricolor green, white and purple color and finally to dark blackish-purple. At maturity, the fruit is soft and fleshy while the seed is hard and bony.2138702Ames 35991

410Ames 35289MOOZ17-002 Cornus florida L. Missouri, United StatesNC7SEEDNot Available2019COLLECTED10/12/2017Big Buffalo Creek Fen Natural Area located approximately 8.30 miles southwest of Stover on north side of Big Buffalo Road just west (circa 0.3 miles) of the Benton and Morgan county line, Benton County38.34233200, -93.08206400231Wild materialCornus florida is a small deciduous understory tree that typically grows 15-30’ tall with a charactertic horizontal branching habit. Native to North America, the natural range includes most of the eastern U.S. from Maine to Florida and from Michigan to Texas, extending into Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma (USGS 1999). The species lack of hardiness limits its use in the nursery industry and provenance is crucial in seeking hardiness. This accession was sampled in USDA cold hardiness zone 5b, where the surrounding zone is 6a. According to Schmitz, A. (The Brenton Arboretum, pers. comm. 11/21/2019), a site visit to this population on 9 November 2019 noted: "A few of the taller Cornus florida at Big Buffalo Creek Fen still had leaves but leaves were killed by freezing temperatures. Almost all tree species in this valley were without leaves as a result of previously reported freezing temperatures. Cornus florida plants at higher elevations a couple miles to the west of this collection site were in peak fall color and fruits were bright glossy orange/red in color". Thus genetics of this accession representing the extreme northwestern edge of the species native range and within a colder microclimate may be best adapted to more northern latitudes or areas that experience extreme temperature fluctuations.2104853Ames 35289
