Narrative
This accession represents genetics originating from central Iowa developed through the combination of three separate, disjunct populations (Ames 31514; Ames 27276; and Ames 31515). Plants from each population were combined together in order to acheive a successful seed increase as the genetic diversity within each original accession was not sufficient (strong self-incompatibility). Round-leaf dogwood is typically noted as a woodland shrub that has a high tolerance to shading, but prefers well-drained yet moist soils. Round-leaf dogwood is native to most of the northeastern US west to the Minnesota/North Dakota border south to very rare, disjunct populations in central Iowa. Genetics of this accession would represent the extreme southwestern edge of the species native range.
