Description from Plant Patent US PP6040:

The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of Amelanchier canadensis which was found in a cultivated area.

The distinct characteristics of the suckering shrub of the present invention are that new shoot sprouts arise from the ground at a close proximity to the base of the shrub, giving the plant a unique, fullform, that the shrub produces densely-packed large, sweet fruit easily picked and that the shrub has thick glossy leaves that withstand hot and humid summers that defoliate other Amelanchier shrubs.

The variety is derived from a plant which isbelieved to be, as confirmed by solicited expert opinion, as most properly classified as Amelanchier canadensis. Some experts, however, believe it may be a hybrid derived from an A. canadensis parent and an unknown Amelanchier parent because of thelarge blossom size and the densely pubescent ovary.

Asexual reproduction of the new variety was accomplished by tissue culture of new bud cells, and showed that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are establishedand transmitted through succeeding propagations.

The accompanying drawing shows a typical shrub specimen of the new variety, together with typical flower and fruit specimens on a larger scale.

40PI 559438CumulusAmelanchier canadensis (L.) Medik. UncertainCORNot Available1990DEVELOPEDCultivarServiceberry species are excellent large shrubs or small trees that are well adapted to the climatic conditions of the upper midwest. They are covered with white flowers in the early spring prior to leafing out. New foliage is often silvery or reddish turning green as it matures. The edible, blue-black fruit ripens in mid summer and is readily eaten by birds as it matures. Foliage develops an excellent yellow-orange to red -purple fall coloration. Plants can be pruned into single or multiple trunked small trees, or can be grown as large shrubs. Crown form is oval to irregular. Has attractive smooth gray bark on the trunk and larger branches. The species A. laevis and A. x grandiflora are used most often in landscape plantings.

Requirements and Culture:

Requires a well drained soil. Does well in full sun or moderate shade. Often found as an understory plant in its native habitat. Can be pruned into a single or multi-trunked tree form.

Limitations:

No serious insect or disease problems. Needs a well drained soil. Susceptible to cedar rust, but not a severe problem.

Selected Cultivars:

A. laevis `Cumulus'- trains easily into a small tree with a narrow, oval crown.

It grows 20 to 30 feet high, 15 to 20 feet wide and is hardy in zone 4. It has fleecy white flowers in spring and bright yellowish to orang-scarlet fall color. Plants I have observed displayed a distinct upright-oval outline in youth, which would make this form useful for street tree plantings or where lateral branch spread must be restricted. Unfortunately, 'Cumulus; has been grafted or budded in the past, and several plants I have observed had succers developing from the rootstock. Supposedly less prone to suckers than other forms. Fire blight was devastating during the 1988 growing season in the southeastern United States.

Features 5-petaled, showy, slightly fragrant, white flowers in drooping clusters (racemes) which appear before the leaves emerge in early spring. Finely toothed, obovate, bluish green leaves (2-5' long) change to brilliant orange-red in autumn (hence the cultivar name). Flowers give way to small, round green berries which turn red and finally mature to a dark purplish black in early summer. Edible berries are sweet, resembling blueberries in size and color, and are often used in jams, jellies and pies. Amelanchiers are also often commonly called Juneberries. Amelanchier x grandiflora is a cross between A arborea and A. laevis.

It will reach 20 to 25 feet at maturit. white Flowers, edible fruits, clean summer foliage, persistent leaves and brilliant red fall color are notable attributes. Light gray bark, attractive in winter, grows faster and will produe a 6 to 8 foot high heavily branched plant from an 18 to 24 inch liner in 3 years. Hardy to -35F. In Georgia trials, this along with 'Ballerina' and 'Princess Diana', have proven the best of the parade. Fall color on all Amelanchiers is variable from year to year. Also the above mentioned cultivars are more leaf spot (Entomosporium) resistant.

42PI 559443Robin HillAmelanchier lamarckii F. G. Schroed. UncertainCORNot Available1990DEVELOPEDCultivarLarge flowers in slender racemes, pink in bud but fading quickly to white

This cultivar has new flowers that open up a delicate light pink color and fade to white. The pink flower color lasts longer in cool weather. In fall, the leaves turn to a good yellow to red.

Habit: Oval-rounded, multi-stemmed

Size: 20-30' high by 12-15' wide

Color: Medium-dark green, turning yellow to red in autumn.

A fine tree (to 20'x 15') to bring a precious 'early spring' to the small garden, this variety can be enjoyed throughout the growing season with its pink-turning-white flowers, small red-purple edible fruits and yellow-to-red foliage color in the fall. Hardiness -30 to -20F.

43PI 559444BallerinaAmelanchier lamarckii F. G. Schroed. NetherlandsCORNot Available1990DEVELOPEDCultivarLarge-flowered shrub or small tree, will reach 15 feet in height. Covered with large white flowers in spring, followed by a crop of red fruits which are very tasty. Named and described by H. J. van de Laar of Holland. - Cornucopia by S. Facciola. 1990.

It is an upright shrub or small tree with spreading branches. The young lieaves are broad elliptic, finely saw-toothed, 2 to 3 inches long and 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 wide, bronze colored, essentially without pubescence. They turn glossy dark green in summer and finally purple-bronze in the fall. The pure white flowers average 1 to 1 1/8 inches in diameter and occur 6 to 8 together in a 3 to 5 inch long fleecy raceme that is more or less pendent. The 3/8 to 1/2 inch diameter fruit is bright red, turning pruplish black when ripe. It is tender and sweet. This selection will grow 15 to 20 feet high and is hardy in zone 4. One source indicated this is a hybrid with A. laevis and the other parent unknown. Named in 1980. Several American nurseries are growing this selection; the fall color is brick-red in the Southeast; has been a genuine success in Zone 7b, superb, large, sweet, juicy fruits, excellent leaf spot resistance, essentially free of fire blight.

Originated in Red Deer River Valley, Alberta (51 N), by A. Griffin before 1923. Wild plant transplanted to Alberta Horticultural Research Station, Brooks. Initial selection and distribution for testing, 1928. Tested at Agriculture Canada Research Station, Beaverlodge (BRS), Alberta, as Brooks White. Selected as an ornamental by J.A. Wallace, BRS, 1946. Introd. by P.D. Hargrave, Brooks, 1964. Berries up to 16 mm diam., nearly spherical, white, easily bruised; typically five to nine per cluster, clusters tight, even ripening, very uneven in size; flavor sweet but bland. Self-sterile. Shrub multistemmed, to 7 in; initially upright, retaining exceptionally tall and erect habit and 3-m spread at maturity; moderate to good suckering close to crown, crown expands indefinitely; crown long-lived, 40+ years; hardy to zone 1. Poor producer, introduced as an ornamental for its habit in large landscapes, for the oddity of its white berries, but mainly for its splendid fall foliage colors.1454385PI 559413

Seen in flower for the first time on 3/31/2022; clearly not A. laevis [this was suspected from the beginning, but the plants were immature when they first arrived]. Flowers of qualifier X appear quite early, and young leaves are pale green and densely hairy abaxially at time of flowering; sepals reflex strongly as flowers fade, all suggesting Amelanchier arborea. Other plants are beginning to flower somewhat later, which could indicate a mixture of taxa within the accession, although none are A. laevis. -SBL2154376NA 85750
