Narrative
Plants in nature observed as rhizomatous specimens with on average a dozen or so suckers within a small 3' x 3' area.  Pubescent leaves and stacked flowers on inflorescence that were slightly past peak flower by 3-5 days when observed at collection site in nature on 4 May (2023). Plant heights reaching up to 15' but typically at 5-6' in height. As of 2023, the current Iowa Department of Natural Resources list of Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern species currently has Amelanchier humilis in Iowa listed as 'no status'. Initiated in 2021, an endangered plant scientific advisory group was assembled to review floristic surveys and herbarium specimens and through group discussion update or assign a recommended status for nearly 400 rare plant species. The current (2023) recommended status of Amelanchier humilis for Iowa is Threatened.
