Narrative
Specimens (two) noted in nature ranging from 40-50' in height and up to 5" DBH, one specimen with two trunks. One specimens flowered heavily (100's inflorescences) and the other with only a dozen or fewer inflorescences. All specimens with glabrous, anthocyanic leaves. Peak flowering occurred at collection site on 4 May (2023). One specimen currently ranks as the largest specimen in Iowa with the following measurements: circumference of 1' 1.5", height of 39.1', and an average crown spread of 17.5' (Rouw, M., personal communication, 4 May 2023). As of 2023, the current Iowa Department of Natural Resources list of Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern species currently has Amelanchier laevis in Iowa listed as 'no status'. Initiated in 2021, an endangered plant scientific advisory group was assembled to review floristic surveys and herbarium specimens and through group discussion update or assign a recommended status for nearly 400 rare plant species. The current (2023) recommended status of Amelanchier laevis for Iowa is Special Concern.
