| 2 | PI 704577 | 'Independence' | Panicum virgatum L. | Illinois, United States | S9 | | | 2024 | DEVELOPED | | | | | | | Independence switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) was characterized by rapid establishment, robust seedling growth, and the capacity to achieve peak production by the second year. Independence is well-adapted to USDA hardiness zones 5b to 7b. In field experiments conducted from 2016 to 2017, averaged over seven locations and all years, Independence annually yielded 13 Mg ha-1 of biomass, outperforming 'Cave-in-Rock' by 25%, 'Liberty' by 7%, 'Shawnee' by 25%, 'Summer' by 53%, and Sunburst by 78%. In wet marginal sites in Illinois from 2020 to 2023, Independence exhibited an average biomass yield of 12 Mg ha-1, outperforming Shawnee by 31%, Liberty by 27%, and 'Kanlow' by 19%, indicating its potential use on less productive land for annual crops. Independence was publicly released by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in October 2021. Syn2 seed was produced and will be maintained by the University of Illinois. | 2165899 | PI 704577 |

| 6 | PI 700113 | 'Cedar Creek' | Panicum virgatum L. | Wisconsin, United States | S9 | | Not Available | 2022 | DEVELOPED | | | | | | | Cedar Creek switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) was selected for increased winter survivorship for three generations, using surviving plants from 'Kanlow'. The first two generations were conducted at multiple locations in Wisconsin and the third generation was conducted at the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve, East Bethel, MN. All Seed production and increases were conducted by either Illinois State University or the University of Illinois. Field evaluations of the third-generation population were conducted at five locations in Wisconsin between 2017 and 2021, located within USDA hardiness zones 3 to 5. Field experiments were planted in both 2016 and 2017. Averaged over the five locations and all trial years, Cedar Creek had 91% ground cover, compared to 96% for Cave-in-Rock, 95% for Shawnee, and 91% for Liberty. Biomass yield of Cedar Creek averaged 12.17 Mg/ha, 20% higher than Liberty, 30% higher than Cave-in-Rock, 31% higher than Shawnee, and 520% higher than Kanlow. Cedar Creek is a high-biomass lowland-type of switchgrass, the first lowland-type adapted to USDA hardiness zones 3 to 5. Cedar Creek was released to the public by USDA-ARS in 2021. Syn2 seed was produced and will be maintained by the University of Illinois. | 2137512 | PI 700113 |

| 71 | PI 672536 | 'Plateau' | Panicum miliaceum L. subsp. miliaceum | Nebraska, United States | PVPO | | Not Available | 2014 | DEVELOPED | | | | | | Cultivar | Seed starch is waxy (amylose free) in nature and it is the single most important grain characteristics for distinguishing from other proso millet cultivars. Grain yield of Plateau was 1953 kg ha-1, as compared to 2016 kg ha-1 for Sunrise, 2003 kg ha-1 for Huntsman, 1988 kg ha-1 for Horizon, 1953 kg ha-1 for Earlybird, 1905 kg ha-1 for Sunup, 1604 kg ha-1 for Dawn and 1020 kg ha-1 for Pl436626. Mean grain volume weight of Plateau was 698 kg m-3, as compared to 728 g kg m-3 for Sunrise 735 kg m-3 for Huntsman, 729 kg m-3 for Horizon, 721 kg m-3 for Earlybird, 720 kg m-3 for Sunup, 714 kg m-3 for Dawn and 530 kg m-3 for P1436626. Seed size of Plateau (5.34 g 1000 seed-1) was similar to all check cultivars including PI 436626. Plateau matured at a similar time compared to the check varieties but it was significantly earlier than PI 436626. Plateau produces panicles 16 days earlier than Pl436626, and 3 days earlier than Huntsman. Plateau plant height (75 em) was not significantly different from the check cultivars including PI 436626 except Sunup {81cm), which was taller. While lodging was rated at only four locations in 2002, analysis shows no significant difference between Plateau and Huntsman. Plateau has cream-colored hull (lemma and palea) and a compactum (closed) head. Proso millet is not infested by any major insects and diseases in the High Plains. However, based on visual observation no insect and disease infestation differentiated Plateau from the other proso millet cultivars. Starch pasting evaluation of Plateau shows that it embodies the lower pasting times, peak temperatures, and final viscosity (Table 2). Plateau has protein content (139.3 g kg-1) was significantly higher than Huntsman (131.4 g kg-1), lower than Dawn {150.3 g kg-1) but not different from Earlybird {135.7 g kg-1) and PI 436626 (145.3 g kg-1). | 1919972 | PI 672536 |

The six breeding generations and associated evaluation research that resulted in the development of these germplasms was initiated in 1973 and continued for over three decades. During their development, the populations were given the name of the base population, EYxFF, followed by the breeding cycle number. The cultivar `Trailblazer? was developed in the first generation or cycle (EYxFF C1) of recurrent breeding for high IVDMD. The resulting tested germplasms were named NE Trailblazer followed by the selection cycle in which the population was developed to simplify their nomenclature. As a result of the multi-generations of recurrent breeding, the resulting populations differ significantly for IVDMD and for 25 other forage quality or biomass composition traits including both acid detergent and Klason lignin. There are also differences among the populations for winter survival. The genetic differences in biomass composition are fully described in: Vogel, K.P., Mitchell, R.M., Sarath, G., Jung, H.G., Dien, B.S., and Casler, M.D. 2013. Switchgrass biomass composition altered by six generations of divergent breeding for digestibility, Crop Science 53:853-862 (doi: 10.2135/cropsci2012.09.0542). | 82 | PI 669371 | 'Liberty' | Panicum virgatum L. | Nebraska, United States | PVPO | | Not Available | 2013 | DEVELOPED | | | | | | Cultivar | Liberty switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a lowland type cultivar that is adapted to USDA Plant Hardiness Zones (HZ) 4, 5, and 6 in the Great Plains and Midwest, USA east of 100 degrees W. longitude and potentially other regions where it has not been tested to date. It was developed for use as a perennial biomass energy crop and is the first high yielding biomass type lowland cultivar that is adapted to this region. It can produce greater biomass yields than upland or forage type switchgrass cultivars that have been developed previously for use in the region and has equivalent winter survival. It has significantly greater winter survival in its adaptation region than previously released lowland switchgrass cultivars that frequently have substantial winter damage and stand loss north of 40 degrees N latitude in the USA. Liberty has the typical lowland switchgrass phenotype but because the female parent plants in the originating crosses was the upland cultivar Summer, it has upland cytoplasm that can be identified using chloroplast DNA markers. Liberty is typically about two weeks earlier in maturity than Kanlow, its lowland male parent cultivar, and can be distinguished from Kanlow and other switchgrass released lowland cultivars by its earlier maturity and chloroplast DNA. It is 10 days to two weeks later in maturity than Summer, its female parent cultivar, and can be distinguished from Summer and other upland cultivars by its lowland phenotype. Foundation seed production of Liberty will be managed by Husker Genetics, the Foundation Seed Division of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE. | 1913348 | PI 669371 |

| 102 | PI 658520 | 'COLONY' | Panicum virgatum L. | North Carolina, United States | NLGRP | | Not Available | 2009 | DEVELOPED | | | | | | Cultivar | Colony was selected for increased cellulosic concentration and cellulosic yields, while holding nutritive value constant as measured by in vitro dry matter disappearance. Colony is a tall growing plant and the mean 5-yr yield from a one-cut biomass study was 15,576 kg/ha vs. 13,643 kg/ha from other lowland switchgrass types. In another study Colony had greater concentrations of cell walls (720 g/kg) and cellulose (339 g/kg) than Alamo (706 g/kg and 327 g/kg), Performer (706 g/kg and 332 g/kg) and Cave-in-Rock (703 g/kg and 319 g/kg). In a third study hay was evaluated as a feed and Colony was inferior in dry matter intake and digestibility relative to other lowland and upland cultivars. Colony is well adapted in the Southeast and offers potential as a source of cellulosic biomass. No major pests have been observed on Colony, but limited acreage does not generally foster infestations. | 1828075 | PI 658520 |

Consequently, it is not as tall a grower as some of the present lowland cultivars. However, emphasized were improved digestible nutrients produced per acre, a combination of yield and digestibility. Performer produced 7, 567 lb/ Ac of digestible nutrients with a dry matter digestibility of 56.5%. When offered to animals in separate experiments, they selected from Performer a diet that averaged 66.5% digestible. The consumed forage averaged 53.2 % large particles that were 65.6 % digestible, 33.0% medium particles that were 66.6 % digestible and 13.9% small particles that were 68.9% digestible. Performer consistently had the greatest digestibility among other cultivars included in the tests. It improved digestibility is attributed, in part, to its reduced lignin concentration which averaged 5.8% at the heads-emerging stage. Performer is well adapted across the Coastal plain and Piedmont regions. It is well liked by animals and can be used for either grazing or as a stored feed. Performer appears to have no obvious pests, although limited acreage does not generally carry the potential for high infections . | 1717741 | PI 644818 |

The germplasm sources consisted of 21 cultivars or experimental populations and 114 plant introductions from USDA-NPGS-GRIN. All but 13 of the plant introductions were collected from prairie remnants in eastern South Dakota. Plants were visually evaluated for vigor, lodging resistance, large stem size, and rust reaction. Two hundred fifty plants were selected from the three spaced-plant nurseries. One leaf per plant was analyzed for ploidy level determination using flow cytometry. Based on nuclear DNA content, plants were classified as tetraploid (n = 152) or octaploid (n = 98). Expected DNA content was 3.0 pg/nucleus for tetraploids (2n=4x=36), 4.5 pg/nucleus for hexaploids (2n=6x=54), and 6.0 pg/nucleus for octaploids (2n=8x=72). The use of DNA content for ploidy classification is less precise than chromosome counts and these classifications should not be taken as a warranty that all plants within each population have the designated euploid chromosome number, and the population may contain aneuploids and/or hexaploids. The plants classified as tetraploid were the parents of WS4U. | 1675937 | PI 639191 |

| 203 | PI 636468 | TEM-LoDorm | Panicum virgatum L. | Texas, United States | S9 | | | 2004 | DEVELOPED | 05/2007 | | | | | Breeding material | Derived from Alamo, a lowland switchgrass cultivar. The selection protocol involved four cycles of selection, the first three of these being mass selection for low dormancy with respect to seed germination. In the last cycle, the 24 clones whose seed exhibited highest germination were selected and and replanted. Seed was harvested from these outstanding plants and germination percentages were determined over several years. Relative rankings of the clones varied from year to year, but the mean germination of seed of the clones was always significantly greater than that of unselected Alamo. Equal portions of seed of each of the genotypes were combined and constitutes the TEM-LoDorm germplasm. The appearance of these clones in the field was no different than unselected Alamo, and the germplasm should be no different than Alamo in any characteristics except germination behavior. | 1668646 | PI 636468 |

Foliage green in color and similar to Sunup. Nebraska trials, average grain yields were 2.5% higher than Sunrise and Huntsman, and 5% higher than Earlybird. Broadly adapted across the high Plains region, yielding well from South Dakota to Colorado and Wyoming. Earlier in maturity than Sunrise and Earlybird, and later than Dawn. Dawn is generally ready for harvest at least 1 week earlier than Horizon. Flowering is similar to Sunrise and Earlybird, but the seed fill period is shorter with appropriate moisture for harvest being reached two to three days earlier. Seed size (158 seeds g-1) is similar to Sunrise and Earlybird, and larger than Huntsman (161 seeds g-1). Grain volume weight (725 g L-1) is similar to Earlybird (721 g L-1) and Sunrise (728 g L-1), and over the past 4 years has generally been higher than other released cultivars. Shorter (33 cm) than Earlybird, Sunrise, Sunup and Huntsman (35-36 cm), but taller than Dawn (28 cm). Straw strength similar to Sunup. Less than 0.1% partially red seed coat is present. No susceptibility to Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia). Dawn and other lines have been attacked by head rot associated with stem boring species in the same nurseries where Horizon has not shown symptoms but Horizon may have escaped due to preference based on relative maturity rather than resistance. | 1645230 | PI 633425 |
