Narrative
Colony was selected for increased cellulosic concentration and cellulosic yields, while holding nutritive value constant as measured by in vitro dry matter disappearance. Colony is a tall growing plant and the mean 5-yr yield from a one-cut biomass study was 15,576 kg/ha vs. 13,643 kg/ha from other lowland switchgrass types. In another study Colony had greater concentrations of cell walls (720 g/kg) and cellulose (339 g/kg) than Alamo (706 g/kg and 327 g/kg), Performer (706 g/kg and 332 g/kg) and Cave-in-Rock (703 g/kg and 319 g/kg). In a third study hay was evaluated as a feed and Colony was inferior in dry matter intake and digestibility relative to other lowland and upland cultivars. Colony is well adapted in the Southeast and offers potential as a source of cellulosic biomass. No major pests have been observed on Colony, but limited acreage does not generally foster infestations.

Description:
Colony resulted from three cycles of selection. The original source population (Cycle 0) consisted of a selected group of 161 plants of the lowland form, representing 11 different germplasm sources. A total of 16 plants from Cycle 2, selected on yield with crude protein and in vitro dry matter disappearance kept constant over initial growth and regrowth, were transplanted in a crossing block, with 16 replicates per plant. The open-pollinated seed was harvested and equal weights of the seed bulked and harvested from an isolated seed increase field to constitute the cultivar Colony.
