Narrative
Seed starch is waxy (amylose free) in nature and it is the single most important grain characteristics for distinguishing from other proso millet cultivars. Grain yield of Plateau was 1953 kg ha-1, as compared to 2016 kg ha-1 for Sunrise, 2003 kg ha-1 for Huntsman, 1988 kg ha-1 for Horizon, 1953 kg ha-1 for Earlybird, 1905 kg ha-1 for Sunup, 1604 kg ha-1 for Dawn and 1020 kg ha-1 for Pl436626. Mean grain volume weight of Plateau was 698 kg m-3, as compared to 728 g kg m-3 for Sunrise 735 kg m-3 for Huntsman, 729 kg m-3 for Horizon, 721 kg m-3 for Earlybird, 720 kg m-3 for Sunup, 714 kg m-3 for Dawn and 530 kg m-3 for P1436626. Seed size of Plateau (5.34 g 1000 seed-1) was similar to all check cultivars including PI 436626. Plateau matured at a similar time compared to the check varieties but it was significantly earlier than PI 436626. Plateau produces panicles 16 days earlier than Pl436626, and 3 days earlier than Huntsman. Plateau plant height (75 em) was not significantly different from the check cultivars including PI 436626 except Sunup {81cm), which was taller. While lodging was rated at only four locations in 2002, analysis shows no significant difference between Plateau and Huntsman. Plateau has cream-colored hull (lemma and palea) and a compactum (closed) head. Proso millet is not infested by any major insects and diseases in the High Plains. However, based on visual observation no insect and disease infestation differentiated Plateau from the other proso millet cultivars. Starch pasting evaluation of Plateau shows that it embodies the lower pasting times, peak temperatures, and final viscosity (Table 2). Plateau has protein content (139.3 g kg-1) was significantly higher than Huntsman (131.4 g kg-1), lower than Dawn {150.3 g kg-1) but not different from Earlybird {135.7 g kg-1) and PI 436626 (145.3 g kg-1).
