The oval, coarsely toothed, sharp-pointed leaves, 3 inches long are dark green above and paler beneath. In winter the orange-chocolate color of the twigs is very striking. These accessions were selected based on tolerance to high soil pH according to Hoch (unpublished thesis, 2018). Germinating seedlings of all three accessions were treated by placing a droplet of 5000uM trifluralin on the expanding meristems at the cotyledon stage. Putative tetraploids were identified based on stomata length (mean stomata length in diploids and tetraploids are 26.4 and 38.8 um, respectively). B. murrayana has lustrous, dark reddish bark with a relatively uniform, good, large pollen grains and leaf stomata larger than its putative ancestors and also larger leaves and fruits than the hybrid (Barnes & Dancik 1985). B. murrayana is known to only exist in two sites in North America with the other site near St. Williams, Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada (Ashburner & MAllister 2016). These specimens represent the only "cultivated" material in existence, and accordingly document this rarest and unusual North American birch. /A/, /B/, & /C/ assigned to differentiate germplasm source per R. Defeo (4/83). Only plants on west side of Heart Pond are original seedlings; later qualifiers were all grown from cuttings. Grafted plants were distributed in 1984. [Mass of seeds collected from original NA 37939 trees in 2015/2016 was accessioned as NA 83829; out of about resulting 20 seedlings from seeds germinated in 2016, four have the B. uber characteristics and can be considered "true to type"; the rest (which are essentially B. lenta, as the characteristics separating "B. uber" are now believed to be caused by a single recessive gene) will be discarded.]	1952513	NA 37939
