Environment description: Steep wooded/bamboo slope above river. Soil type hard to estimate; seems like mostly rocky gravel with shallow organic layer.

Comment: Large, multi-stemmed, vase-shaped tree leaning over river; height 15 m, basal diameter estimated to be 45 cm. Bark dark brown, somewhat but not overly flaky. Leaves ovate, to 7 cm long and 3.5 cm wide; base cuneate, apex acute; 12 vein pairs; petioles to 1.5 cm. Buds large, to 7 mm, greenish. Fruiting catkins to 30 mm x 12 mm, ovoid; bracts 10 mm x 7 mm, lateral lobes spreading; nutlet 3 mm long,
