Environment description: High-quality, native, mesic deciduous woods on loose, loamy sandstone amongst very large boulders. North-facing with variable 10-50 degree slopes. Majority of specimens located at base of bluff or near water’s edge (Iowa River).
Number of plants sampled: 9
Associated species: Quercus rubra, Fraxinus nigra, Ostrya virginiana, Betula papyrifera (few), Asarum canadense, Solidago sp., Rubus idaeus strigosus, Carpinus caroliniana, Pinus strobus (few – measuring approximately 36” d.b.h.), Tilia americana, Prunus serotina, Acer negundo, Acer saccharum, Ulmus sp., and Urtica dioica.
Comment: Poor seed production (2016). A few fruiting catkins were noted, which were brown and expanded, but very persistent and not shattering when disturbed. Noted approximately 100 reproductive specimens with average size measuring 18” d.b.h. The largest specimens noted measured approximately 25” d.b.h. and close to 90’ in height. Good, clean leaf quality. Extreme variation in bark – some very thin and flaky and others exhibiting large peeling, thick sections. Seed production in 2017 was excellent. Majority of catkins were yellow in color and at peak maturity at time of collection (08/25/2017).
