Narrative
Specimens sampled in nature were multi-stemmed, vase-shaped trees with prominent horizontal lenticels and peeling gray bark with approximate height to 10 m and basal diameter 1.3 m with largest stem to 35 cm DBH. Described by Barnes & Dancik (1985) as an octoploid (2n=112) derivative of an unreduced gamete of Purpus birch (B. x purpusii Schneid. = B. alleghaniensis Britt. x B. pumila L., 2n = 70) and a reduced gamete of yellow birch (B. alleghaniensis, 2n = 84). B. murrayana has lustrous, dark reddish bark with a relatively uniform, good, large pollen grains and leaf stomata larger than its putative ancestors and also larger leaves and fruits than the hybrid (Barnes & Dancik 1985). B. murrayana is known to only exist in two sites in North America with the other site near St. Williams, Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada (Ashburner & MAllister 2016). Genetics of this accession represent the same location of where the TYPE specimen (#660004 (MICH#1115811)) was collected by Barnes & Dancik.
