Tejocote is the most common name for specimens of the genus Crataegus in Mexico. Although several Crataegus species are found in our country, only C. Mexicana is a recognized cultivated species. The cultural aspects and uses of this fruit tree come from the pre-Hispanic time; however, few studies on its potential uses have been conducted. Tejocote fruit has been traditionally utilized in the All Saints and Christmas celebrations mainly as an essential element for decorating the altars on the ?Day of the Dead? celebration, and as an ingredient of the traditional ?ponche?, a hot fruit punch beverage specially prepared during these days. In the traditional parties called ?posadas? that take place before Christmas, tejocote fresh fruit are found inside ?pi?atas?, which are decorated boxes containing fruits, candies, and little gifts. Tejocote fruits are processed to make jellies, marmalades, syrups and traditional candies. Recently, the nutritional value of tejocote fruit has been assessed, and some studies show that tejocote fruit have high contents of A and C pro-vitamins, minerals, flavonoids, and others nutrients. In addition, the use of the tejocote tree as a rootstock for other Rosaceae species (e.g., apple, pear, and quince) is promising. Though information about the role of tejocote in traditional medicine can be found in literature, its pharmacological evaluation has not been fully addressed. In some parts of Mexico, tejecote is taken for treating flu and cough, and also to prevent several cardiovascular diseases. Fruit round ~13 mm diam; attractive red skin, white flesh, twiggy growth habit, heavy bearer, rust susceptible. Selection from the wild by T.O. Warren, Hattiesburg MS.

Heavy was teken from the Pearl River swamps of Mississippi in the late 1960's by T.O.Warren. This is the heaviest bearing clone I have ever seen. The tops bend with loads of fruit, ranging in size from less that 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. It is a Crataegus aestivalis clone and may have a little mixed blood in its parentage. Heavy is prone to rust, but even with this leaning and fault it has always been one of my most consistent bearers. It is the last to ripen with sound fruit, even during the bad, rainy years. It comes through for me. For example, a six year old tree produced 6 gallons of fruit. The next year, at seven years of age, it bore 12 gallons. -- T.O. Super Spur was dug out in the wild by J.S. Akin as a chance seedling in the swamps near Sibley, Louisiana. It is a very heavy, spurtype bearer; one tree bore 86 measured gallons in 1984. `Superspur is an upright tree that blooms in late February and early March and ripens fruit in late April and early May. The fruit is large with a light red/yellow skin and yellow flesh. Fruit firmness and fruit retention are poor. A "new" (in 1999) late-blooming cultivar from Texas with large size fruit. `Texas Star is a upright tree that blooms in mid March and ripens in early to mid May. The test trees are only a few years old at this time, so information is limited. It is reported to be performing well in Texas and Louisiana following spring freezes. The fruit are large to very large with red/orange skin and yellow flesh. Some list this variety as No. 1 Big, but it goes by the name Big Red. This variety was located by T.O. Warren in the Pearl River swamps of Mississippi in the spring of 1969. It is the largest fruit seen so far in the South and has a lot of one inch size fruit. This is a true Crataegus Aestivalis species. `Big Red' is an upright, spreading tree that blooms in early March and ripens fruit in late April and early May. The fruit is large with red skin and pink flesh. Fruit have good firmness and retention is good.
