Environment description: Deciduous forest, rolling terrain, 5 kettle ponds and occassional smaller ephemeral ponds, thick understory, thinning upper canopy. Off trail, northwest of WCA-002 collection site; 6 meters from ephemeral wetland/pond. Growng in open light. Soil: Berrien Sandy Loam (Brown sandy loam over yellow and then mottled sand with clay at irregular depths, stone-free). Slope: 8°. Aspect: West.

Comment: Single trunk; flat topped crown. Height: 4.6 m; spread: 3.3 m; DBH: 4 cm. Older bark is gray with brown undertones, flakey in irregular patches. Leaf base cuneate to truncate; veins 5-7 per side; blade ovate; blade 3.7 cm wide X 4.1 cm long; petiole 1.7 cm long; bud rounded with 5 to 7 scales; surface glabrous to somewhat scabrous; foliar rust disease present. Younger stems whitish gray; smooth; few lenticels. 2 year old thorns 1.5 to 2 cm long; blackened tips 0.5 cm; 1 to 2 mm wide at the base; less than or equal to 1 mm wide at 0.5 cm from apex where black colour begins; slightly segmented. Older thorns are branched, thicker, longer and slightly segmented. Fruit 5-9mm; pinkish red with slight pruinosity; raised calyx; tapered oval shape.
