(synonym = '#1 Big') Fruit large, round, 16-19 mm diam; skin red; red flesh, late blooming. Selection from the wild by T.O. Warren, Hattiesburg MS. Some list this variety as No. 1 Big, but it goes by the name Big Red. This variety was located by T.O. Warren in the Pearl River swamps of Mississippi in the spring of 1969. It is the largest fruit seen so far in the South and has a lot of one inch size fruit. This is a true Crataegus Aestivalis species. `Big Red' is an upright, spreading tree that blooms in early March and ripens fruit in late April and early May. The fruit is large with red skin and pink flesh. Fruit have good firmness and retention is good.
