Comment: Info from the PI book: "38176 to 38182. From China. Collected by Mr. Frank N. Meyer, Agricultural Explorer for the Department of Agriculture. Received May 14-15, 1914. Quoted notes by Mr. Meyer. 38176. Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge. Malaceae. Hawthorn. "(No. 1209. Village of Tachingko, near Taianfu, Shantung, China. March 21, 1914.) A large-fruited variety of Chinese hawthorn, fruit said to be red outside and inside. Of agreeable sour taste. Can be kept almost a year. A most excellent fruit for jellies, compotes, cake fillings, etc. Chinese name _Ta suan cha_, meaning 'large sour haw.'"

Comment: Seeds collected by Edward Garvey and Karen A. Williams (USDA-ARS, PEO) on November 17, 2016, from one tree in the Arboretum at the USFS Genetic Resources and Conservation Center, Chico, CA [formerly the Chico Plant Introduction Garden]. Originally from Chinese material received from Frank Meyer in 1914. There are no other specimens of the species growing at the station.
