9PI 699961'FL4XR16'Lolium multiflorum Lam. Florida, United StatesNLGRPNot Available2022DEVELOPEDCultivar‘FL4XR16’ tetraploid forage-type annual ryegrass is a synthetic cultivar selected for mid-late maturity, high dry matter (DM) yield and resistance to gray leaf spot (GLS). In the spring of 2016, a nursery of FLRED4X experienced a high incidence of GLS and 50 highly disease resistant individual plants were replanted and intercrossed. Seed from this intercross were used to establish a half-sib nursery in fall 2016. The nursery was subsequently rogued for uniform maturity and the remaining plants were allowed to intercross to produce the base population FL4XR16 in spring 2017. The base population went through one additional cycle of selection for uniformity. Seed harvested from this final selection cycle or a later isolated increase of this population was used to establish DM yield experiments at Citra, FL and Tifton, GA in 2018-19; at Hague, FL, and Tifton, GA in 2019-20; and at Hague FL 2020-21 for a total of five location-years. FL4XR16 was not significantly different in DM yield from the top entry in a given test in four of these five experiments. Maturity ratings at Gainesville show that FL4XR16 was mid-late in maturity. The locations of evaluation for this cultivar have primarily been in the Coastal Plains Region of the US, but considering its pedigree, it is expected to perform well across the southern US annual ryegrass growing region. 2137121PI 699961

47PI 678572'FL Red'Lolium multiflorum Lam. Florida, United StatesW6Not Available2016DEVELOPEDCultivar'FL Red" tetraploid annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.} is a synthetic cultivar selected for later maturity and resistance to annual ryegrass crown rust caused by Puccinia coronata Corda and grey leaf spot caused by Pyricularia grisea Sacc. FL Red DM total seasonal yields across the SE region for the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 growing seasons (total of 12 location years) were not different from the top yielding entry at eight of the twelve locations. At more southern locations (Gainesville and Marianna, FL, and Calhoun, Plains, and Tifton, GA}, FL Red showed high yields in all four years. Maturity ratings taken at Gainesville show that FL Red was among the later maturing tetraploid entries evaluated. Changes in maturity date can be both beneficial (in cool or dry spring years where summer perennial grass production is limited) or detrimental (late maturing annual ryegrasses may suppress and delay early summer grass production). FL Red had excellent levels of resistance to crown rust and moderate resistance to gray leafspot.1942859PI 678572

56PI 675350'FL PE'Lolium multiflorum Lam. Florida, United StatesW6Not Available2015DEVELOPEDCultivar`FL PE?diploid annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is a synthetic cultivar selected for later maturity, excellent cold tolerance and resistance to crown rust (Puccinia coronate) and gray leaf spot (Pyricularia grisea). It offers sufficient cold tolerance to be grown in the northern part of the annual ryegrass region of the U.S. It also has sufficient disease resistance to be grown in the southern annual ryegrass belt. FL PE was produced from cold tolerant germplasm jointly produced in: Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Gainesville, Florida and Marianna, Florida. The beginning seed sources for this selection program were composited in 2003 from FL/NEX2003 (new3) LRCT, FLX2003 (new3), NE/FL 2003(new4) LRCT, NE/FLX2002 (new2) LRCT, and M/FL 2003(new4) LRCT. Eight cycles of recurrent mass selection for crown rust resistance, gray leaf spot resistance, and mid-late seed maturity were completed at Gainesville, FL. FL PE showed high DM yields at Gainesville, FL, and was among the higher yielding lines at Tifton and Calhoun, GA (total of 14 location years data reported). Maturity ratings at Gainesville show that FL PE was among the later maturing lines evaluated. Late maturity can be beneficial in years with limited early summer perennial grass production, however late maturity can also delay early summer production of these grasses, like bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.]. FL PE had excellent levels of resistance to crown rust disease at Gainesville, FL.1927419PI 675350

139PI 658507'INTERCROSS'Lolium multiflorum Lam. Texas, United StatesW6Not Available2009DEVELOPED2010CultivarIntercross is a turf-type intermediate ryegrass and has some characteristics of both annuals and perennials. Intercross has narrow leaves with dark green color, however it has rolled leaf vernation, and roots are about 90% fluorescent. Intercross is a diploid ryegrass where 2n = 2x = 14 chromosomes. Intercross has a darker green leaf color compared to Axcella, Axcella 2, Panterra and Gulf. Darker leaf color is more evident late in spring (April). Transition of Intercross is similar to Panterra and Axcella 2, and much earlier than most intermediate or perennial ryegrass cultivars. Intercross differs from Panterra by having less tillers/plant, but is similar to Axcella and Axcella 2. Plant height of Intercross was 81 cm, which was shorter than Axcella, and Panterra, but taller than Axcella 2. Intercross is much shorter than the forage type Gulf ryegrass, or the old turf cultivar Froghair. Flag leaf collar height of Intercross was 44 cm and it also was lower compared to Axcella and Panterra, but higher than Axcella 2. Flag leaf length of Intercross was 46 cm, which was less than Axcella, but longer than Axcella 2, and similar to Panterra. Leaf sheath length of Intercross was 39 cm which was less than Axcella and Panterra, and just 2 cm longer that Axcella 2. Heading date of Intercross is 14 days later than Axcella and Panterra, but similar to Axcella 2. Intercross is not infected with fungal endophyte . 1827750PI 658507

Texas, United StatesPVPONot Available2009DEVELOPED2009CultivarNelson is a tetraploid annual ryegrass developed for high forage production in the southern USA. Plant stature of Nelson was 124 cm and is larger and taller than Gulf (96 cm), but similar to tetraploid cultivars TAMTBO and Jumbo. Flag leaf length of Nelson was less (p>0.05) than Jumbo, Prine and TAMTBO, but longer than Gulf. Nelson had a mean number of 31 spikelets per spike compared to 37 for Jumbo and Prine, 38 for TAMTBO, and 25 for Gulf. Other characters where Nelson was different were lemma width, where Nelson was wider (p>0.05) than TAMTBO but similar to other cultivars. Nelson also had a slightly higher 1000 seed weight compared to Jumbo, TAMTBO, and Gulf. Freeze damage has not occurred on Nelson over the past three years at Overton when a low temperature of -8 C occurred in 2007. Nelson is not infected with the fungal endophyte. The fluorescence level of Nelson is 99.49%. The ploidy level is 100% tetraploid. In forage trials at Overton, Nelson had the highest numerical yield of 14,114 kg/ha for the 2007-08 growing season; however, several other cultivars were not statistically different. Nelson was significantly (p>0.05) higher yielding compared to Prine, TAM 90, and other entries. In growing season 2006-07 at Overton, Nelson produced an average yield. Forage yields for 2005-06 at Overton indicated Nelson produced a seasonal yield of 8194 kg/ha. It was ranked 2nd in the trial and not significantly different than TAMTBO. In comparing the 3-year mean, Nelson and TAMTBO had the two highest yields at Overton. Forage yields at Beaumont for 2007-08 indicated that Nelson had the second highest yield. The total season yield of 5964 kg/ha was significantly higher than all cultivars other than Tetrapro and Big Boss . At Beaumont in 2006-07, Nelson produced the 5th highest forage yield of 6664 kg/ha which was not significantly lower (p>0.05) than the top forage yield. In 2005-06, Nelson produced the 4th highest yield. For the three year mean, Nelson was the 2nd highest producing entry. Data from Mississippi, Oklahoma, Georgia and Florida indicate Nelson has high forage yield potential and adequate winter hardiness for the ryegrass growing belt. 1822286PI 658137

Oklahoma, United StatesW6Not Available2009DEVELOPEDPRE 2009Genetic materialFrom the cross PI 165903 x PI 219594, anther culture was performed on F2 plants, and colchicine used to derive diploid plants. Seed was subsequently harvested from these plants. Calluses were induced from mature embryos of the doubled haploid lines, and frequencies of embryogenic callus formation compared. An individual line was selected based on tissue culture responsiveness and transformability. Seed produced from this line was designated NFLT12. The frequency of embryogenic callus formation in NFLT12 is 56%, double the frequencies of the parental lines. Transformation efficiency (the number of independent transgenic plants divided by the number of original calluses used) is 4.8%. Plant height averages 45.1 cm, while flag leaf height, length, and width average 28.1 cm, 14.6 cm, and 5.2 mm, respectively. Heading date occurs on average 45 d after planting. Spike length averages 13 cm. Mean awn length of NFLT12 is 7 mm and seed weight is 100 seeds g-1. Generation time, measured from planting to seed harvest, ranges from 105 to 114 d. 1794564PI 655941

This contrasts with Gulf and TAM 90 which are diploid cultivars. TXR2005-TBO is the first tetraploid cultivar released by the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. The Oregon State Seed Laboratory tested TBO for ploidy level and reported it as 100% tetraploid. Plant stature of TBO was 116 cm and is larger and taller than Gulf, but similar to TAM 90. TBO averaged about 10 cm less in plant height compared to Jumbo and Prine in space plantings in Texas. Flag leaf length of TBO was 15.3 cm and was slightly longer than other cultivars which were 13.2, 11.7, and 13.8 for Gulf, TAM 90 and Jumbo, respectively. Leaf width was 10.6 mm for TBO and not different than Jumbo and Prine, but was 1 mm wider than TAM 90. TBO produced an average of 46 tillers per plant compared to 57, 61, 49, and 40 for TAM 90, Gulf, Jumbo and Prine, respectively. Freeze damage was not observed over the past two years at Overton, Texas when a low temperature of 17 F (-8 C) occurred. The fluorescence level of TBO according to the Oregon State Seed Testing Laboratory was 100 %. TBO has good crown rust resistance and is similar to TAM 90 for resistance to this disease. Total season forage yields of TBO at Overton, Texas have been very high during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 growing seasons. In each of these years, TBO has produced higher total season forage yields that any other commercial cultivars. TBO has also produced above average forage yields in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia during the past two years. TXR2005-TBO is not infected with the fungal endophyte Neotyphodium occutans C.D. Diploid (2n=2x=14 chromosomes). In seedling stage, has rolled leaves and no auricles. Plant stature is much shorter than forage type annual ryegrass and relatively shorten than Axcella and Panterra turf-type annual ryegrass. Mature plants at Overton, TX were 65 cm for Axcella 2 compared to 79 and 86 cm for Panterra and Axcella, respectively. Tillers very well. Mean flag leaf length was 13, 16 and 18 cm for Axcella 2, Panterra and Axcella, respectively. Mean awn length at Overton averaged 3.3 mm; however about 15% of plants have very short awns or are awnless. Seed width is approximately 1.7 mm and seed length is 6 mm. One thousand seed weight of Axcella 2 was 2.1 g compared to 2.4, 2.5 and 2.8 g for Panterra, Axcella and TAM 90, respectively. Coleoptile color upo emergence is green or purple. Anther color is 80% yellow and 20% purple. Turf growth rate, or turf height measured in the cold season from December through February in a turf trial at Overton indicated Axcella 2 was significantly shorter than Axcella and Panterra and not significantly different than Palmer IV and PhD. In turf trials at Overton and College Station, TX, Axcella 2 was similar to Panterra, but superior to Axcella. Has finer textured leaves than Axcella and Panterra. Has darker green leaf color compared to Axcella, but similar to Panterra; however may hold this color longer into the late spring than Panterra. In over seeded turf trials at Overtin, TX, began to transition out by 21 April, which is similar to Axcella and Panterra, but significantly earlier than perennial ryegrass cultivars. Exposure to -8?C in 2005 resulted in leaf tip freeze injury but all plants recovered. Not infected with fungal endophyte Neotyphodium occutans. 226PI 632337'SHIWASUAOBA'Lolium multiflorum Lam. JapanPVPONot Available2002DEVELOPED1989CultivarLeafy and annual Italian ryegrass forage cv. capable of producing early yields superior to Marshall varieties of annual ryegrass. Single hay clipping studies in Southern Oklahoma generated yields comparable to Marshall annual ryegrass. In Oklahoma, fall and spring forage performance trials have indicated superior spring yields and competitive fall yields when compared to Marshall (annual) and Linn (perennial). Distinctive feature relates to extremely early maturity and early forage production potential. When fall sown in Oct., heading usually occurs in March to April. Two weeks earlier in flowering when compared to Marshall and Ribeye and two weeks earlier than Linn. Medium resistance to Crown rust (Puccinia coronata) and appears tolerant of most other common diseases of ryegrass known to occur in the Southern Plains. The extremely early heading date makes this variety useful for growers interested in a cool-season grass forage which is rapid in growth, nutritious and palatable to livestock and can be utilized for livestock grazing or haying, then quickly removed for the sowing of no-till summer crops. Recommended for areas in the U.S. where the mean temperature is above 16 C in October. Also suggested for use in blends with later maturity annual ryegrass varieties to enhance the early forage production potential of the germplasm. For more inforamtion click here1641411PI 632337

Also had high seed yields and resistance to stem rust (P. graminis) typically found in ryegrass seed production areas of the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Moderate resistance to Helminthosporium leaf spot disease (Dreschlera spp.) and was considerably more resistant than Surrey. Cold resistance may have increased from doubling the chromosomes as was disease resistance and maturity. Larger plant including stems, leaves, seed heads and seed than the diploid, Surrey.
