Narrative
Nelson is a tetraploid annual ryegrass developed for high forage production in the southern USA. Plant stature of Nelson was 124 cm and is larger and taller than Gulf (96 cm), but similar to tetraploid cultivars TAMTBO and Jumbo. Flag leaf length of Nelson was less (p>0.05) than Jumbo, Prine and TAMTBO, but longer than Gulf. Nelson had a mean number of 31 spikelets per spike compared to 37 for Jumbo and Prine, 38 for TAMTBO, and 25 for Gulf. Other characters where Nelson was different were lemma width, where Nelson was wider (p>0.05) than TAMTBO but similar to other cultivars. Nelson also had a slightly higher 1000 seed weight compared to Jumbo, TAMTBO, and Gulf. Freeze damage has not occurred on Nelson over the past three years at Overton when a low temperature of -8 C occurred in 2007. Nelson is not infected with the fungal endophyte. The fluorescence level of Nelson is 99.49%. The ploidy level is 100% tetraploid. In forage trials at Overton, Nelson had the highest numerical yield of 14,114 kg/ha for the 2007-08 growing season; however, several other cultivars were not statistically different. Nelson was significantly (p>0.05) higher yielding compared to Prine, TAM 90, and other entries. In growing season 2006-07 at Overton, Nelson produced an average yield. Forage yields for 2005-06 at Overton indicated Nelson produced a seasonal yield of 8194 kg/ha. It was ranked 2nd in the trial and not significantly different than TAMTBO. In comparing the 3-year mean, Nelson and TAMTBO had the two highest yields at Overton. Forage yields at Beaumont for 2007-08 indicated that Nelson had the second highest yield. The total season yield of 5964 kg/ha was significantly higher than all cultivars other than Tetrapro and Big Boss . At Beaumont in 2006-07, Nelson produced the 5th highest forage yield of 6664 kg/ha which was not significantly lower (p>0.05) than the top forage yield. In 2005-06, Nelson produced the 4th highest yield. For the three year mean, Nelson was the 2nd highest producing entry. Data from Mississippi, Oklahoma, Georgia and Florida indicate Nelson has high forage yield potential and adequate winter hardiness for the ryegrass growing belt.

Nelson is a 3-way cross of ryegrass lines TXR2000-T2, TXR2002-T17, and �Jumbo�. The TX lines are from germplasm of �TAM 90�. The cross was made by growing replicated rows or each parent. Best forage potential plants cross-pollinated. Seeds from best plants were bulked. In 2002-2003, this germplasm was grown in a space planting at Beaumont, TX. Seed from 34 plants exhibiting high forage potential cross-pollinated and produced seed. Seed was bulked. In 2003-2004, plants were grown at Beaumont and superior plants cross-pollinated and produce seed. In 2005, seed was increased in Oregon.
