The native distribution of C. glabra includes mostly the eastern half of the U.S., with northern limits stretching into southern Michigan with western limits touching the eastern Iowa border. Pecans, C. illinoinensis, are economically important due to their utilization via nut production for human consumption, while the true hickories are extremely valuable for wildlife, wood working, and of course providing that “hickory-smoke” flavor to meats. C. glabra meats are not known for being consumed via humans, but are attractive to various birds and animals. Their presence is likely lacking in the human diet due to the difficulty in extracting the meats. Notable ornamental characteristics include newly emerging foliage that resembles a flower, and yellow/brown fall color. Foliage is typically very clean with little to no foliar diseases. Carya are not a commonly planted species via the nursery trade largely due to the presence of an extensive taproot system that makes transplanting difficult. While the average homeowner may claim “nuts” in the landscape are an undesirable trait or a nuisance, attention should be turned to the benefits of nuts in the landscape. Generally it is difficult to find nuts on the ground as wildlife quickly eat and gather them. Hickories tend to be labeled as “slow growing”, which is definitely not true. Carya are only slow growing during the first few years of establishment as growth is focused on root growth. Shortly after establishment, growth on a properly planted Carya can be considered extremely vigorous with annual growth easily surpassing two to three feet per year. All Carya are noted for being extremely drought tolerant, while C. illinoinensis, C. cordiformis, C. acquatica, and C. laciniosa are also flood tolerant. This species is adapted to extremely dry soils and should not be planted in wet soils. | 1940349 | Ames 33356 |

The species is relatively tolerant to alkaline and slightly acidic soils and can tolerate both extreme drought and severe flood events. However, well-drained soils are preferred. Genetics of this accession represent the extreme northern edge of the species native range with nuts typically reaching maturity in the last week of September into the first week of October in Iowa. Specimens at the collection site in nature measured ~25 inches DBH, with the largest specimen sampled measuring 40.5 inches DBH. Nut measurements (determined by averaging measurements (mm) from 5 randomly selected nuts off a single mother tree) were variable. Averaged measurements (length/width) recorded from 5 mother trees are as follows: tree #4: 23/15 mm, tree #5: 17/12 mm, tree #6: 26/16 mm, tree #7: 24/15 mm, and tree #8: 24/12 mm. Noted observations of progeny from the 2011 collection noted Tree#4 as having strong resistance to the black pecan aphid, Melanocallis caryaefoliae (Davis)(Hemiptera: Aphidadae). Recollection in 2024 found Tree#4 measuring 42.5" DBH dead as the result of major flooding events in 2013, 2014, and 2019 where floods in 2013 persisted for nearly three months. Flood stage for this population of pecan resides at 538 MSL (Mean Sea Level) which can be compared against data from the Mississippi River Lock and Dam 17 (Flood Events 2009-2024), where water levels were recorded 10-12' above ground level where multiple trees of Ames 30882 have been sampled. | 1865828 | Ames 30882 |
