10PI 682044'Carolina Rose'Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. var. batatas S9Not Available2015CultivarCarolina Rose is rose skinned with dark orange flesh. It is moist and sweet when baked. Shapes are blocky and elliptic. Plants are moderately compact to slightly trailing. Yields are high, similar to Beauregard, and have a high packout of No. 1 sized roots. It is susceptible to root-know nematode (M. incognita), resistant to fusarium wilt (F. oxysporum), and moderately resistant to soil pox (Streptomyces soil rot). Plant production in the beds is good, storage ability is moderate. Dry matter averages 19%. Flowering is moderate and fertility is good. As a parent it produced some lines that were very well shaped, but it tended to be only a fair parent for disease tolerance. It did not succeed as a commercial line.1950108PI 682044

Lam. var. batatas North Carolina, United StatesS9Not Available2001DEVELOPED1988CultivarLeaves cordate to triangle in shape with no to slight lateral lobes, green with some protruding of abaxial veins in immature leaves. Vines and petioles green with light purple at the apex of the petiole and at the leaf axil. Newly emerging terminal leaves range from slightly to mostly purple. Plants produce a spreading vine, and form storage roots of an open-cluster type, with individual roots being elliptic to round-elliptic in shape. Skin color of roots red to purple-red which lightens during storage. Flesh color uniform dark orange flesh color. Plants produce adequate flowers and set seed readily. Flowers rounded, white limb with a purple throat, 4.4 cm in length and 3.5 in width. Outer two sepals at the base of the flower shorter than the inner sepals. Sepal shape ranges from elliptic to obovate, with the apex of the outer sepals being acute in shape and the inner sepals being obtuse; pubescence is absent and they are green in color. Slightly exerted stigma is white, and style white at the base and purple at apex. Skin of storge roots smooth, but in wet growing conditions water blisters around the root lenticels are formed. Storage root dry matter averages 19.9% compared with 18.2% and 22.5% for Beauregard and Jewel, respectively. Yield and grade consistently compared favorably with Beauregard and was superior to Jewel. Yield similar to Beauregard for the U.S.#1 and canner grades and slightly higher for jumbo grades. Harvest dates typicalloy 3-5 d earlier than Beauregard. Roots store well without excessive weight loss from storage rots or dehydration. Baked roots have uniform color, a moist smooth flesh, and good taste. Moderately resistant to soil rot (Streptomyces ipomoeae). Susceptible to southern root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita). Moderate resistance to the sweetpotato flea beetle (Chaetoncnema confinis). Susceptible to white grub species (Plectris aliena) and wireworm (Diabrotica, Systena comples).1631933PI 628761

121PI 612703'GA90-16'Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. var. batatas United StatesS9Not Available2000DEVELOPED02/11/2000Breeding materialA cooked product with taste and aroma similar to white potato. Grows well under not, humid conditions. Good resistance to flea beetles (Systena elongata and S. blanda), the southern rootknot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita), and fusarium wilt or stem rot (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. batatas). Much lower flavor intensity, similar to other staple crops (e.g., cassava, potato, rice). Excellent potential for developing commercial cultivars with low flavor impact. Annual prostrate, vining plant. Alternate, ovate leaves, tip abruptly pointed acute to acuminate, base truncate to weakly cordate, margins entire with occasional irregular angled teeth, veins green to purple with greater anthocyanin toward the base and on the abaxial side, blade intermediate to dark green with anthocyanin largely restricted to veins, leaf length to width ratio typically 1.03, leaf size intermediate and variable, substantial leaf shedding especially late in season. Petioles green to purple, length varying with age and canopy density. Vines more or less circular in cross-section, 1 to 1.5 meters in length, generally green with little anthocyanin. Storage roots obovate, light tan exterior with fresh roots having a cream interior. Growing period 120 to 140 days. In baking trials, flesh color white with yellowish tint with roots displaying little fiber or discoloration. Sugar concentration markedly less than the traditional cultivar 'Jewel.' When prepared as french fries, absorbed less fat (6.9%) than 'Jewel' (10.6%) and had a distinctly better appearance and texture. Yields less than most widely grown traditional North American cultivars (e.g., 'Beauregard' and 'Jewel').1594446PI 612703
