W-386 is a clonally propagated sweetpotato genotype that originated from a single seed from a polycross breeding nursery in 1997 in which 22 parents were randomly distributed in four field replications at the USDA ARS, U. S. Vegetable Laboratory (USVL), Charleston, SC. Pollination was by natural bee populations. Its original designation was 98-217, and it was later renamed W-386. The maternal parent of W-386 is W-328, whose maternal parent is W-278 from the sweetpotato breeding program at the USVL. The paternal parent of W-386 is one of the other 21 genotypes in the polycross nursery
