Narrative
W-317 is a sweetpotato breeding line evaluated in the field several years at the U.S. Vegetable Laboratory for yield, quality, and pest resistance. Bedded roots sprout readily. W-317 plants are vigorous and produce a leaf canopy that covers the ground. Roots of W-317 have a dark red skin and a creamy yellow flesh. This genotype shows good resistance to soil insect pests and nematodes. The material placed in storage at the PGRCU was virus tested tissue culture plantlets sent by Zvezdana Pesic VanEsbroeck, Director of the Micropopagation and Repository Unit, Department of Plant Pathology, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC.

Description:
W-317 is a clonally propagated sweetpotato genotype that originated from a single seed from a polycross breeding nursery in 1991 in which 29 parents were randomly distributed in four field replications at the USDA ARS, U. S. Vegetable Laboratory (USVL), Charleston, SC. Pollination was by natural bee populations. Its original designation was 92-162, and it was later renamed W-317. The maternal parent of W-317 is W-250, whose maternal parent is J/6-120 that came from the sweetpotato breeding program at the USVL. The paternal parent of W-317 is one of the other 28 genotypes in the polycross nursery
