W-317 is a clonally propagated sweetpotato genotype that originated from a single seed from a polycross breeding nursery in 1991 in which 29 parents were randomly distributed in four field replications at the USDA ARS, U. S. Vegetable Laboratory (USVL), Charleston, SC. Pollination was by natural bee populations. Its original designation was 92-162, and it was later renamed W-317. The maternal parent of W-317 is W-250, whose maternal parent is J/6-120 that came from the sweetpotato breeding program at the USVL. The paternal parent of W-317 is one of the other 28 genotypes in the polycross nursery
