| 0 | PI 566824 | 'Boomer' | Quercus macrocarpa Michx. | Oklahoma, United States | NC7 | | | 1993 | COLLECTED | 1972 | Along Boomer Creek near Clinton, Custer County. | | | | Wild material | Tall, long-lived, deciduous hardwood tree native to the Great Plains from southern Texas up through and into Canada. Originally collected from native stands in Custer County, Oklahoma. Selected from seven collections evaluated in a series of long term growth trials, 'Boomer' consistently outperformed the others in overall growth and habit. Moderate growth up to 60 feet. Branches form conspicuous corky ridges after second year. Bark light gray. Deciduous leaves, dark green with grayish green undersides, dense, large (ranging in size from 6-12 inches long and 3-6 inches wide). Field studies at three sites have proven this selection is well adapted for windbreak use on the Southen High Plains and Rolling Plains of Oklahoma and Texas. It is adapted to a wide range of soil types and will perform well in dry areas when provided supplemental irrigation. Heavy spreading branches, large dense leaves, and large acorns make it attractive to wildlife by providing shelter and food. It will make an attractive landscape plant for urban and recreation areas by providing dense shade. Hardiness Zone 5. Released by James E. "Bud Smith Plant Materials Center in Knox City, Texas in 1994. | 1461795 | PI 566824 |

| 96 | PI 272069 | 'Falkenbergensis' | Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. | | NA | | Not Available | 1961 | | | | | | | Cultivar | Full name as recorded at the U.S. National Arboretum: Quercus petraea 'Falkenbergensis'. Received as Quercus petraea 'Falkburgensis'. From Plant Inventory No 169: "272068 to 272074. From the Netherlands. Plants purchased from the Vuyk Van Nes Nursery, Boskoop. Received March 6, 1961. 272068 to 272072. Quercus petraea (Mattuschka) L. ex Lieblein Fagaceae. [...] 272069. 'Falkburgensis'." Note from card for NA 16956, which indicates that this was originally from "Tannanhoft Arb., Germany" [sic]: "Selection with leaves often 6" long and more deeply lobed than in the typical phase of the species." This accession seems to be related to Frederick G. Meyer's USDA-Longwood plant explorations in Europe; see page 48 of PLANT EXPLORATIONS: Ornamentals in the Netherlands, West Germany, and Belgium. The cultivar epithet's spelling was adjusted from 'Falkburgensis' to 'Falkbergensis', according to the card, but not corrected to 'Falkenbergensis' until later. | 2166244 | PI 272069 |

Bark smooth and grayish when young, cracking with age into irregular quadrangular plates delimited by fissures. Leaves glossy and glabrous above, dull green below with tufts of red hairs in the vein axils, often three-lobed. This hybrid originates from the parentage between Quercus buckleyi (Texas oak) and Quercus shumardii (Shumard Oak). This hybrid has been documented across a narrow band running from northeast to central East Texas. Known to be hardy to USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5. Autumn foliage is long-lasting and scarlet-red in color. Very adaptive to alkaline soils, heat, and drought. | 2191750 | Ames 36331 |

Minimal acorn production estimated at 10-15 acorns per genet. Recent research (Hipp et al., 2019), noted that using the unweighted pair group method with arithmeic mean and non-metric multidemensional scaling ordination did not separate individuals of Q. muehlenbergii and Q. prinoides as distinct species. However, W. M. Keith Jr. (1957) states that "Q. muehlenbergii never spreads vegetatively and acorns are rarely borne until it has attained small tree size whereas Q. prinoides bears at extremely small sizes, usually a foot or so high and spreads vegetatively via rhizomes". This collection represents genetics harvested from specimens with rhizomatous growth habits. | 2191817 | Ames 36332 |

Light-colored clays and coarse arkosic sands also found. (Source: USGS South Carolina Geologic Map Data.) The primary soil type in the collection area is classified as Ailey Series sand, moderately wet, 2 to 6 percent slopes. The Ailey Series consists of moderately deep or deep to fragic soil properties and deep or very deep to densic materials. This soil is well drained or somewhat excessively drained. The upper layer (0-12.5 cm) of this soil is dark grayish brown loamy sand that is frequently dry. It has a weak fine granular structure, is very friable, non-sticky, non-plastic, and is strongly acid. The lower strata soils (12.5-90 cm) are yellowish brown loamy sand, with weak fine granular structure, very friable, non-sticky, non-plastic, and moderately acid. Deeper depths (below 90 cm) are characterized by slightly greater clay content that is slightly more plastic and strongly acid. Estimated to reach a mature height at 18-20’ and spread at 12-15’. Leaves are rather persistent (strong marcescence) throughout winter. Specimens are shrubby, multi-stemmed and low-branching. Often referred to as Bigelow oak and typically found throughout most of central Texas and parts of southern Oklahoma. According to Lance (2022), “Bigelow oak is mostly allopatric from typical Durand Oak in its range. East of this range, errors in herbarium annotations of juvenile Durand Oak material, where leaf shapes may mimic Bigelow oak, have caused confusion and inaccurate range extensions.” | 2159016 | Ames 36184 |

This accession represents genetics from southeastern Iowa in the extreme northwestern edge of the species native range and thus likely exhibiting tolerance to slightly colder, more northern regions of the Midwest. Sampled three areas: near Mooar (Sec. 5 and Sec. 8); near Argyle (Sec. 16); and near Ft. Madison (Sec. 10) where each area sampled is separated by approximately 10.00 miles. Known for being small, scrubby trees that average 30-45' in height at maturity. The species is rarely used in cultivation and in nature is frequently found on very poor, thin, rocky or sandy soils. According to local woodland owners, the species is extremely resistant to wind damage. This accession is being maintained as numerous, genetically diverse mother trees originating from three widely distanced areas in order to ensure sufficient outcrossing as well as prevention of inbreeding due to the limited abundance of the species found within the area sampled in southeastern Iowa. | 2159006 | Ames 36174 |

Existing tree of unknown origin with an older display label that indicates it is Quercus robur; however, Dr. Alan Whittemore says that it is not, and is probably Q. x bimundorum (Q. robur x Q. alba) instead. It may be related to a tree across the road and slightly further west that also appears to have hybrid characteristics, but is a bit closer to Q. alba in appearance (NA 81548). In November 2019, a second tree growing nearby (just along the road but closer to the woods' edge) was noticed; it is even larger, and the same display label indicating (probably incorrectly) that the tree is Quercus robur. It is presumed to be another Q. x bimundorum. Form received: unknown propagule type. | 2153775 | NA 84794 |

Seed collected for germination study and accessioned as NA 81546. Later (2017) reidentified as Q. x bimundorum (Q. robur x Q. alba); small leaveswith slightly auriculate leaf bases visible. Bark and branching are somewhat intermediate between the putative parents in appearance. Tree may be related to another tree (NA 84794) adjacent to the Azalea Hillside parking lot that was labeled Quercus robur, but appears to be Q. x bimundorum according to Dr. Alan Whittemore. | 453 | NA 89038 | RJL2022MO-001 | Quercus bicolor Willd. | Missouri, United States | NA | | Not Available | 2022 | COLLECTED | 09/27/2022 | Roadside Park on the south side of US Highway 24, approximately 0.2 kilometers west of junction with Monroe County Roads 235/228. | 39.47139500, -92.06531500 | 222 | As a primary component of the woodland overstory, most trees are growing in full sun. Even so, juvenile trees can be found in part shade to shade of the woodland understory as well. The site is generally well drained, with a nearby creek that occasionally overflows. This is a deciduous forest that is generally mesic to mesic-dry. The underlying geology of this area is of Middle Pennsylvanian-Middle Series-Desmonian Stage and comprised of Cherokee Group- Cabaniss Subgroup- (200 ft. max) cyclic deposits of shale, sandstone, siltstone, clay and limestone with seven significant coal beds. Cherokee Group- Krebs Subgroup-(110 ft. max) cyclic deposits of predominantly shale and sandstone with limestone, siltstone and two significant coal beds. (Source: USGS Missouri Geologic Map Data). The surface soil profile of this area is Piopolis silty clay loam, 1 to 3 percent slopes, frequently flooded. The Piopolis series consists of very deep, poorly drained or very poorly drained soils formed in silty alluvium on flood plains or flood-plain steps within lake plains. Flooding from stream overflow is common during late winter and spring. (Source: NRCS Web Soil Survey). | Wild material | | 2139603 | NA 89038 |

One specimen noted was tree form measuring approximately 3 m in height. Extremely limited acorn production estimated at 1-10 acorns per genet. Genetics acquired as acorns (2022) from both rhizomatous and small, multi-stemmed bush types. Genetics acquired as root suckers (2023) were sampled only from rhizomatous specimens. Recent research (Hipp et al., 2019), noted that using the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean and non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination on genetic data did not separate individuals of Q. muehlenbergii and Q. prinoides as distinct species. However, W. M. Keith Jr. (1957) states that "Q. muehlenbergii never spreads vegetatively and acorns are rarely borne until it has attained small tree size whereas Q. prinoides bears at extremely small sizes, usually a foot or so high and spreads vegetatively via rhizomes". We suspect that multi-stemmed bushes or small trees likely represent genetics that are of hybrid origin between Q. muehlenbergii x Q. prinoides, including introgression by either parent. Those that are represented as clonally suckering specimens represent true to type Q. prinoides. This accession is being maintained as a small planting of distinct, rhizomatous clones that all share the same low growing (e.g. less than 2 meters tall), growth habit that spread via rhizomes. | 2139720 | Ames 35936 |
