| 2 | PI 630939 | 'MAGICAL MICHAEL' | Ocimum basilicum L. | United States | NC7 | | | 2002 | DEVELOPED | | | | | | Cultivar | Developed at the facilities of the Dept. of Horticulture, Purdue Univ., West Lafayette, IN by James E. Simon, Professor and Mario R. Morales, Research Scientist. Derived by selfing and selection from a distinct plant found in a population planted for observation in 1989. Population was formed by naturally intercrossing 52 USDA basil accessions, originally from Iran, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Yugoslavia, and Zambia in 1985. A single plant (identified later as PFT) with unique growth habit and flower morphology, was selected for development based upon its small flatten plant structure, intensely compact purple inflorescences, deep green leaf color, attractive appearance, and sweet fragrance. Selfed progeny from the single plant was grown in 1992 and found to be highly heterogeneous. Flat top plants with very compact purple inflorescences and high linalool content were selected and selfed for 5 generations. Natural selfing was accomplished by isolating the plants in the greenhouse. The final single line selected was evaluated in 1997 and 1998 and no variants were observed. No further selection on this line was needed. | 1633352 | PI 630939 |

Nestle scientists made selections from an open pollinated population for oil content and line advancement in France in 1993. After three years of successive selfing, O4.2 breeds true to the large leaf sweet basil type. Plants narrower than California Large Leaf, leaf width narrower and produces a greater number of leaves on the main stem before flowering with a higher degree of branching off the main stem. O4.2 produces more essential oil per plant than California Large Leaf; intra plant variation also significantly lower; O4.2 has almost twice the linalol. Plant height 36 inches with glossy dark green leaves. | 1554857 | PI 602951 |

Nestle scientists made selections from an open pollinated population for oil content and line advancement in France in 1993. After three years of successive selfing, O2.3 breeds true to the large leaf sweet basil type. Leaves smaller (width and length) than California Large Leaf and produces a greater number of leaves on the main stem before flowering with a higher degree of branching off the main stem. O2.3 produces more essential oil per plant than California Large Leaf; O2.3 produces significantly greater amounts of Euganol than O4.2 which produces more Linalol and Cineol. | 20 | PI 584458 | 'Sweet Dani' | Ocimum basilicum L. | United States | NC7 | | | 1994 | DEVELOPED | 12/01/1994 | | | | | Cultivar | Derived from PI 358465 originally from Yugoslavia. Annual cultivar of lemon basil derived from four cycles of selfing and selection, distinct from other commercial lemon basils due to its high citral content. Its round shape makes this cultivar an attractive ornamental and culinary herb. Plant can be used fresh in floral arrangements for interior decoration or dried in potpourris. Dry leaves/flowers can be used alone or in mixtures to prepare herbal teas or as a spice to flavor foods and beverages. Plant grows well in containers both indoors and outdoors. Large ovate leaves (8.1 cm long, 4.2 cm wide), and uniform light-green color. Plants tall (75 cm), bushy (70 cm wide) and bloom at about 75-78 days after planting. Inflorescences are slim and long (35-45 cm) with small white flowers in rosettes or whorls of six spaced 2.5 cm along the stiff rachis. Blooming is profuse and lasts around 20-25 days. Seed is black and mucilaginous (100 seeds weighs 0.a9 grams). Vegetative propagation is easily done. Annual plant can be pruned back and kept vegetative for long time periods. the high citral contend is the essential oil (60-76% of the total oil) results in a distinct and intense lemon aroma with a subtle floral note. | 1482151 | PI 584458 |
