Narrative
Variety O4.2 derived from three generations of selfing from a large leaf sweet basil (Genovese type). Nestle scientists made selections from an open pollinated population for oil content and line advancement in France in 1993. After three years of successive selfing, O4.2 breeds true to the large leaf sweet basil type. Plants narrower than California Large Leaf, leaf width narrower and produces a greater number of leaves on the main stem before flowering with a higher degree of branching off the main stem. O4.2 produces more essential oil per plant than California Large Leaf; intra plant variation also significantly lower; O4.2 has almost twice the linalol. Plant height 36 inches with glossy dark green leaves.
