10PI 684911'Elva-Mary mint'Mentha ×piperita L. New York, United StatesCORNot Available2015DONATED10/09/2015Cultivated materialHere's much of the promised back story starting with the "landport" part. My grandfather (Arthur James) was the longtime Presbyterian minister in the tiny village of Smithfield (with a mailing address of Amenia, NY) where the mint was found, and my grandmother (Elva James) taught in one-room school there for many years. After they retired, my grandfather built a house (himself!) in Smithfield, and named it Landport after the section of Portsmouth, England, where he was born. Charles Dickens was born in Landport, too. And I've kept the name alive in my email address. By the time we found the mint in the late 1960s, just my grandmother was alive. My sisters and I found the mint growing wild on the roadside outside the fence of the nearby vast Lasker estate. Purchased by Albert and Mary Lasker (of cancer-research award fame), by the time we found the mint, only Mrs. Lasker (as we always called her) was alive. She was a vastly interesting woman, as Google can explain, including having with her own strong connections to NIH. Info about the Lasker Foundation is here: http://www.laskerfoundation.org/ The Laskers and my grandparents moved in completely different circles, but I think I was told that as country neighbors they had a polite nodding acquaintance. I think it would be absolutely lovely to name the mint for the two women involved in its existence, Elva (my grandmother who keep it growing in her yard for decades) and Mary (who's roadside provided it). By putting Mary's name second, "Mary mint" provide the nice word play of sounding like "merriment." Hence my name of "Elva-Mary Mint" for whatever it is I have growing in my yard. 1927821PI 684911

30PI 684898M. spicata VietnamMentha spicata L. VietnamCORNot Available2010COLLECTEDUncertain improvement statusWe have a lovely mint from Northern Vietnam. it was the favorite mint of a family I know and furtively made it's way from Hanoi to Saigon to France to the Willamette Valley. Our friends gave us a start. it has proven as vigorous. It's attributes are relatively tender stems making it quite suitable for rice paper rolls, exceptional fragrance and all in all a good versatile mint for the kitchen. There is a mint seed sold as Vietnamese mint and that is not what we have. - Rose Marie McGee 6/10/20101842014PI 684898

Our all-around favorite for Mint Juleps or iced tea. Kentucky Colonel is a reliably hardy, strongly flavored spearmint that is favored by many Low country growers. From http://www.petesherbs.com/Mint.htm (ca. 2003) - Regarding mints in the caribbean: 'I have not found this in the Caribbean. What I have found is the spearmint-scented, rugose leaved form of M. spicata L. This passes in the commerial herb trade as M. cordifolia (misapplied name) or Kentucky Colonel. It is present wherever the Conquistadores had influence, from the Caribbean to Lake Atitlon, Guatemala to New Mexico to the Philippines. The mojito is the Cuban version of the American mint julep (or vice versa), ...this mint, and is the very same one that is ... used in the mint julep in the South.' - email comments by A. M. arvensis, a standard tester strain used in all interspecific hybridizations. The origin of this strain is unknown. We reported the strain as being of European origin since it was part of a collection from Europe. However, J.K. Morton, Univ. of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ont. is quite certain from calyx morphology that it is from North America. Strain is fully fertile and has 96 somati chromosomes as determined by Ikeda (1961). Very susceptible to verticillium wilt and powdery mildew. The strain is true breeding for phorphological appearance and herbage odor. The herbage odor is apparently equivilent to pure isomenthone, but chemical assay of the oil has not been completed. This may be isopulegone rather than isomenthone.

Harley, Kew Gardens, originally from S. N. Sobti Jammu, India. (MJM - Flowers terminal, spikes narrow, has anthers; looks fertile, strong mp odor. some hairs on stem but not hairy like 10028 longifolia. Leaves lanceolate with sharp teeth. Might be a spicata but pollen size needed to determine whethre it is spicata or longifolia. Old flower spikes are male sterile but young have anthers. Sobti reported a somatic chromosome number of 27 i 1962 and 36 in 1965 for M. longifolia var. royleana. We obtained no seed from attempted crosses but this does not necessarily mean that this strain is more than environmentally sterile.

M. J. Murray notes - M. crispa L. or M. spicata l. var. crispa Schr. 2n = 4x = 48. Verticillium wilt resistant. Fully fertile in summer-grown greenhouse plants. Winter greenhouse plants usually have environmentally-induced sterility. Murray (1968) showed that carvone-odored M. crispa had genotype Cc Aa and segrated 12 spearmint: 3 menthone:1 piperitone in S1 progeny.

487NA 87381(selection)Mentha spicata L. NANot Available2023CloneFull name at U.S. National Arboretum: Mentha spicata (selection). Received as Mentha 'Wintergreen'. Because of the name under which it was received, this was initially presumed to be the hybrid mint named 'Sister Julie's Wintergreen', but it shares none of the distinguishing characteristics of that cultivar and seems to have a strong spearmint aroma without any wintergreen component. The young plant has short internodes and small, dark green leaves that otherwise resemble typical spearmint. If it is a named cultivar, its identity is uncertain, but 'Wintergreen' is an invalid name. -SBL2158312NA 87381

492NA 87386NA 87386Mentha ×villosa Huds. NANot Available2023CultivarReceived as Mentha suaveolens. The name on the original nursery tag was simply "Mentha suaveolens," was transmitted for accessioning as M. suaveolens 'Redstem Applemint', and as a result was corrected to M. x gracilis 'Madalene Hill' (of which "red-stemmed applemint" is an older, incorrect name.) The plant has now been identified as M. x villosa based on its spearmint scent, robust growth, and large leaves; all parts are hairy. M. x villosa is frequently confused with M. suaveolens (see Tucker and DeBaggio 2006. The Big Book of Herbs.) -SBL2158317NA 87386

494NA 87388(selection)Mentha spicata L. NANot Available2023CloneReceived as Mentha x villosa 'Mojito Mint'. Note: this appears to be a misidentified selection of M. spicata; its foliage is nearly hairless and wrinkled and lacks the sweet scent of many typical M. spicata cultivars and selections. -SBL2158319NA 87388

497NA 87408(selection)Mentha spicata L. NANot Available2023CloneFull name at U.S. National Arboretum: Mentha spicata (selection). Received as Mentha spicata (English spearmint). This is clearly a different selection of mint from others received at the same time, but a valid cultivar name (if one exists) is unknown at present. It is reminiscent of a spearmint-scented white peppermint; further ID work should be performed when the plant is in flower. -SBL2158339NA 87408
