Narrative
Received as Mentha suaveolens. The name on the original nursery tag was simply "Mentha suaveolens," was transmitted for accessioning as M. suaveolens 'Redstem Applemint', and as a result was corrected to M. x gracilis 'Madalene Hill' (of which "red-stemmed applemint" is an older, incorrect name.) The plant has now been identified as M. x villosa based on its spearmint scent, robust growth, and large leaves; all parts are hairy. M. x villosa is frequently confused with M. suaveolens (see Tucker and DeBaggio 2006. The Big Book of Herbs.) -SBL
