Narrative
M. royleana from Tucker who obtained it from Dr. R. M. Harley, Kew Gardens, originally from S. N. Sobti Jammu, India. (MJM - Flowers terminal, spikes narrow, has anthers; looks fertile, strong mp odor. some hairs on stem but not hairy like 10028 longifolia. Leaves lanceolate with sharp teeth. Might be a spicata but pollen size needed to determine whethre it is spicata or longifolia. Old flower spikes are male sterile but young have anthers. Sobti reported a somatic chromosome number of 27 i 1962 and 36 in 1965 for M. longifolia var. royleana. We obtained no seed from attempted crosses but this does not necessarily mean that this strain is more than environmentally sterile.
Leaf Shape = Ovate
Flower Color = White
Verticillium = Suseptable, 2.0' rating
Oil Composition = 14.9% Piperitenone oxide, 6.97% limonene

Comment:
on p. 473, Magnol's Botanicon monspeliense (1688) is cited as the source of the numbers accompanying species names, so the name is validly published by reference to an earlier description
although a reference by Linnaeus to a basionym is lacking, under
Shenzhen ICN
Art. 41.4 this can be inferred
