(Results of more than 500 will not return images.)

This search will show only accessions that have material that may be requested, including those not seasonally available.
You may list accessions with separators (commas or semicolons, as shown below) or by entering them on separate lines, such as

59Ames 35758Ames 35758Agastache sp.Iowa, United StatesNC7SEED2021DEVELOPEDNEAR 2021Breeding materialThis accession is an interspecific hybrid between Agastache foeniculum (Ames 35586) originating from southeastern Montana and A. scrophulariifolia (Ames 35234) originating from southeastern Minnesota. Crosses were produced by isolated hand pollinations. When grown in central Iowa, both accessions flowered from the end of July through the middle of September, with Agastache foeniculum initiating and ending flowering approximately two weeks prior to A. scrophulariifolia.

Reciprocal crosses resulted in varying frequencies of hybrid recovery; using A. scrophulariifolia as the seed parent resulted in 8.5% hybrids whereas using A. foeniculum as the seed parent resulted in 4.3% hybrids. Hybrids mostly display intermediate morphology with moderate stem pubescence, plant height being intermediate, and leaf base cupping being intermediate between the two parental species. Leaf size on the hybrids is closer to A. scrophulariifolia than A. foeniculum but all hybrids produced foliar fragrance similar to that of A. foeniculum (i.e. licorice scent) at an intensity intermediate to the two species.

The species is rather restricted to the extreme eastern border and especially the southeastern corner of Montana with majority (12 herbarium specimens) being collected in Carter County. Genetics of this accession would represent the northwestern edge of the species native range. In nature, plants of this accession measured approximately 30-36 inches tall and were still green with a few flowering specimens noted at time of collection (12 September 2020). 2107749Ames 35586

Little literature exists (J. Carstens, pers. communication, 14 October 2020) on this hybrid, but Vogelmann (1985) had success in creating this hybrid regardless of maternal or paternal parent combination. The native range of A. scrophularifolia extends from the western edge of central Minnesota to the east coast stretching south to northern Missouri and east to the Carolinas. The native range of A. foeniculum is reported from the eastern edge of Montana to the Great Lakes and south to the southern borders fo Minnesota and Wisconsin with scattered disjunct populations in the eastern Rockies and parts of the Black Hills. Their ranges overlap in central Minnesota as well as their flowering times (e.g. August-September). Intermediate morhological characters of both species are noted in this accession: light-purple flowers with anise-scented leaves that are not noticeably whitened beneath (Widrlechner, M., pers. communication, 15 October 2020). Accession seems to be mostly or completely sterile with little to no seed production when plants within the accession are allowed to cross. This accession may be female fertile and thus backcrossing to A. scrophulariafolia or A. foeniculum may be successful. Plants of this accession reached 4' in height with inflorescences averaging 6" in length. 2107748Ames 35585
