Select the tab for the type of search. Each tab has everything you need to do to perform that type of search.

(Results of more than 500 will not return images.)

This search will show only accessions that have material that may be requested, including those not seasonally available.
You may list accessions with separators (commas or semicolons, as shown below) or by entering them on separate lines, such as
PI 651794

The primary soil type in the collection area is classified as Johnston Series soils (0 to 2 percent slopes, frequently flooded). The Johnston series consists of very deep, very poorly drained soils that are occasionally to frequently flooded for short to extended periods. Permeability is moderate to rapid. These nearly level soils are alluvial in origin and typical of floodplains and swamp. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Johnston Series soils are comprised of mucky loam that is friable with siliceous elements in the upper 0-75 cm. Lower strata range in percentages of mucky loam and loamy fine sand.

The primary soil types in the collection area are classified as Nankin-Lucy Complex soils (20 to 60 percent slopes). The Nankin Series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils on uplands of the Coastal Plain. They formed in stratified loamy and clayey marine sediments. Slopes range from 0 to 60 percent. Soils are comprised of sandy loam in the upper 25 cm to sandy clay loam and sandy clay in lower strata to about 1.7 meters deep; these soils are strongly acid. The Lucy Series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils on uplands. They formed in sandy and loamy marine and fluvial sediments of the Southern Coastal Plain. Slopes vary from 0 to 45 percent. These soils are generally loamy to sandy loam in the upper 25 cm and sandy clay loam in the lower strata to 2 meters; these are strongly acid soils.

New Jersey, United StatesNA2022COLLECTED10/24/2022Plants growing on the east side of Atlantic County Road 543, Green Bank Road, in wetlands of the Mullica River, approximately 1.01 kilometers southwest of the intersection with River Road in Green Bank, New Jersey. Plants are common but scattered on the east side of the road at this location. 39.60472300, -74.593781002Plants grow in full sun to light shade throughout this permanently wet to inundated habitat that is comprised mostly of emergent and obligate wetland herbaceous plants, deciduous shrubs, and Chamaecyparis thyoides, none reaching more than 5-10 meters tall. There are small elevation changes throughout this wetland, but the location is surrounded by water year-round.
Soils: The underlying geology of this area is the Cohansey Formation of middle Miocene origin and comprised of sand, white to yellow with local gravel and clay. It is sometimes locally stained red or orange brown by iron oxides and (or) cemented into large blocks of ironstone. Unweathered clay is typically dark gray, but commonly weathers white where it is interbedded with thin beds of ironstone. Sand is typically medium grained and moderately sorted although it ranges from fine to very coarse grained and from poorly to well sorted. Sand consists of quartz and siliceous rock fragments. Some beds are locally micaceous. Maximum thickness in the map area is about 60 meters; however, thickness is difficult to determine because of the irregular basal contact and extensive post-depositional erosion.

The primary soil type in the area of this collection is classified as Manahawkin muck, 0 to 2 percent slopes, frequently flooded. This soil is moderately high to high in the organic layers and high in the mineral layers comprised of sandy or sandy-skeletal, siliceous, dysic, mesic terric haplosaprists. This soil is considered extremely acid or very strongly acid in the surface tier and very strongly acid or strongly acid in the lower tiers and in the mineral substratum. The mineral content of organic layers ranges from 5 to 80 percent. Organic layers consist of mostly sapric material. Some pedons have subhorizons or a surface horizon of hemic material up to 25 cm. Woody fragments range from 0 to 50 percent, by volume, in the organic layers. These fragments are mostly twigs, branches, or logs ranging in size from 3 mm to 51 cm in diameter and completely break down when rubbed or crushed. The depth of this soil ranges from 0.2-2 meters. This soil is considered wet to inundated year-round.

Soils: The underlying geology of this area is estimated to be of lower Paleozoic origin and comprised of Peters Creek Schist. This is comprised of chlorite-sericite schist containing interbedded quartzite. Interestingly, this area is very close to and may interface with the adjacent formation of Ultramafic Rocks that includes serpentine, steatite, and other products of alteration of peridotites and pyroxenites.

The primary soil types in the collection area are classified as Hatboro Silt Loam which consists of soils formed in alluvium derived from metamorphic and crystalline rock. They are on flood plains. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Hatboro Silt Loam soils are poorly drained and have a high to very high surface runoff index. These soils are subject to periodic stream overflow, which usually occurs during the winter and spring months. The A and B horizons are moderately acidic to neutral, generally to a depth of 1-2 meters; the C horizon below ranges from a depth of 2-3 meters with uniformly acidic soils.

The seed that formed the original plant was obtained from an open-pollintaed A. maritima subsp. oklahomensis growing on the bank of the Blue River near Tishomingo, Oklahoma. 'September Sun' has been propagated with high rates of success from softwood cuttings by using the methods of Schrader and Graves. Ramets grow rapidly and can be 2 meters tall within 2 years. Suitable for use in USDA hardiness Zone 4a and possibly in areas as cold as USDA Zone 3a. Although the heat tolerance and minimal chilling requirement of this cultivar have not been established, it is native to USDA Zone 7a. Therefore, its useful range includes areas with mean annual minimum temperatures at least as mild as -15 C, and attempts to use 'September Sun' in somewhat milder climates are warranted. Thrives in wet soils, can survive complete inundation of its root zone with fresh water indefinitely, and is more resistant to drought than are other alders cultivated in North America. Should be planted at exposed sites only. Its symbiotic relationship with Frankia, makes 'September Sun' an excellent choice for nitrogen-poor soils. Vigorous plants that remain free of foliar chlorosis in soils exceeding pH 7 have been grown in Iowa. Mature plants are large shrubs or small trees with multiple trunks that form broadly rounded, upright canopies 7 meters tall and 5 meters wide. Trunks support more leaves and axillary shoots than are found on plants of the others subspecies. This leads to dense canopies of glossy leaves that are darker green than the leaves of all other alders indigenous to North America. Leaves display mottled blends of yellow, orange, and rich brown under autumnal conditions in USDA hardiness Zone 5a. The infructescences of 'September Sun' are medium to dark brown, cone-like strobili; each is 16-22 mm long and 11-14 mm in diameter. Strobilimature 1 year after pollination and then persist on the branches through at least one more season, providing subtle ornamental appeal throughout the year. This cultivar differs from other genotypes of its species as the fastest-growing, most densely foliated, and most symmetrically shaped individual observed in field trials with over 1000 plants.1700783Ames 27961
