303NA 87167(undetermined cultivar)Camellia japonica L. NANot Available2023CultivarFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Camellia japonica (undetermined cultivar). One plant growing in bed AC-CA-04 was formerly treated under the number NA 4697-CH, C. japonica 'Lady Vansittart', but was found not to belong to that cultivar, calling into question its belonging to NA 4697 as well. Possibly 'Julia Drayton', but not conclusively identified. In addition, a second plant growing together with it under the same number was found to be another, different cultivar ('Tama-no-ura') and was already removed. This one was believed to possibly be 'Julia Drayton' by Carole Bordelon. This accession may ultimately be removed entirely, but any real connection to NA 4697 is unlikely, and until that time it should be reassigned for clarity. -SBL Form received: unknown propagule type.2155205NA 87167
304NA 85389(hybrid selection)Camellia hybr.NANot Available2023CloneFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Camellia (hybrid selection). Four large hybrid camellias, growing at the back edge of the planted portion of AC-CA-01 at the edge of the woods, have been known for a long time, but were previously unaccessioned. The curator recalls old tags (now gone) that used to have breeder's codes on them, and according to Dr. William Ackerman, they were selections of his that didn't make the final cut to be introduced. They bear a very strong resemblance to other C. oleifera hybrids, especially 'Winter's Snowman', which has a very similar flower except that the present accession has around 10 somewhat crinkled, more or less full-length petals with no petaloids (only stamens). The flowers are large, up to 4 inches in diameter, and have a fragrance that is typical of hybrids with C. oleifera and C. sasanqua background. Its foliage is glossy and thick, similar to 'Winter's Snowman', and like it shows probable C. x hiemalis background; the two could easily be siblings from the same cross. The four existing plants are indistinguishable in bloom and foliage and are almost certainly identical clones. [Update 4/8/2019: while hanging new labels on plants, I found a small, broken plastic hanging tag on the ground beneath one of the middle plants (now 85389-J) with the following written in pencil: "Code # 9-34". Carole remembered them tagged with something like this at one time; could this be Ackerman's code? Similar numbers 9-260 ('Frost Prince'), 9-255/253 ('Two Marthas'), 9-478 (not released), and 9-744 ('Sunworshipper') have been documented by Anne Andrick. -SBL] Form received: unknown propagule type.2154207NA 85389

This cold-hardy variety is widely grown in Japan and favored for producing mild-flavored tea. These are descendants of a tea plant found on the University of North Carolina campus. From open-pollinated seed of NA 84160-01, a single plant growing at South Farm at the Woody Landscape Plant Germplasm Repository in College Park/Beltsville, Maryland, sown spring 2022. The potential for hybridization with other accessions or species is non-zero, but the plant is quite distant from any other members of the genus (no other accessions are known to be growing at the same facility). From the record of the seed parent accession, NA 84160: Received from Morris Arboretum in January 2006 (when the plants were first recorded) or earlier. This had been incorrectly lumped in with NA 64899 and qualified 64899-002; it should have received its own accession number. From cuttings of NA 79387-H, propagated in 2011 under the former assumed identity of Camellia japonica x Franklinia alatamaha, now thought to be proven incorrect. Notes from parent accession, NA 79387: "Rare, original plant, 40 years old. [According to Hembree et al. 2019, Cytogenetics, Ploidy, and Genome Sizes of Camellia and Related Genera, for this accession the mean holoploid/2C genome size determined by fluorochrome staining using propidium iodide to be 5.94 +/- 0.51 pg. That result is consistent with pure Camellia japonica background and inconsistent with Franklinia alatamaha hybridization, so this accession was demonstrated to be merely C. japonica. See HortScience 54(7) 1124-1142, July 2019 for details.]"2151760NA 79387

I had changed the name of the accession at that time, but later noticed that the other plant in the accession does not appear to be infected and is 'Winter's Fire'. Most likely the virus was transmitted unintentionally during grafting, but the rootstock was not all infected; this has happened with a number of Ackerman's camellia selections that he donated to USNA in the 2000s, often as plants that he had previously obtained from nurseries. Age: 70 years old in 2000. Years in training: 50 years in 2000 (in training since 1950). Gift of Mr Susumu Nakamura, Shonan School of Bonsai. The name "Camellia harianna" is not a valid name; per a National Bonsai Foundation newsletter article by Dr. Thomas Elias (USNA Director), the bonsai plant received with this name is a "kantsubaki", which if true would effectively place it as a selection of Camellia hiemalis. Form received: grafted plant.According to the International Camellia Society's checklist and register, the only cultivar 'Pink Anemone' is a C. japonica, and is a synonym of C. japonica 'Marguerite Gouillon Rose'. The plant received under NA 65013 is clearly not C. japonica, but appears to be a hybrid similar to others produced by Dr. Ackerman's breeding work involving C. oleifera. The name does not appear to be published and could have been a working name that was confusingly transmitted as a cultivar epithet. This may be an original plant from Dr. Ackerman's breeding work, but more information is sought. -SBL2147468NA 65013

494NA 87583(white sport of 'Winter's Charm')Camellia hybr.NANot Available1994Cultivated materialAn apparent sport of 'Winter's Charm' that was tracked as one of several (four) plants of NA 65010 prior to being assigned individual inventory qualifiers in 2007. It was not noticed until 2023 that the smallest plant bears white flowers instead of the typical pink of 'Winter's Charm', but the flower size, form, and the plant's growth habit (spreading and somewhat weeping) and foliage (large, dark green, and glossy) otherwise resemble 'Winter's Charm'. Although the flowers are similar overall to several white-flowered cultivars originated by Ackerman, the plant is very different in appearance. The whole plant seems to be white-flowered, so if these assumptions are correct, then presumably a sport was propagated by grafting without realizing that any differences existed.2165751NA 87583
