PI 643127 | 'Banks' | Oryza sativa L. | Arkansas, United States | NLGRP | | Not Available | 2006 | DEVELOPED | 2004 | | | | | Cultivar | Banks heads 93 days after emergence and is 112 cm in plant height. On a relative straw strength scale (0 = very strong, 9 = very weak) Banks, Francis, Wells, LaGrue and Cocodrie rated 4, 3, 3, 3 and 2, respectively. Rough rice grain yields of Banks are one of the highest in the Arkansas Rice Performance Trials (ARPT). Milling yields (mg g-1 whole kernel:mg g-1 total milled rice) at 120 mg g-1 moisture from the ARPT, 2000-2003, averaged 630:710, 650:710, 630:730, 620:700 and 660:710 for Banks, Francis, Wells, LaGrue and Cocodrie, respectively. Banks is resistant to common rice blast (Pyricularia grisea (Cooke) Sacc.) races IB-1, IB-49, IB-54, IC-17, IG-1 and IH-1 under Arkansas conditions, with ratings of R, MR, R, MR, R, and R respectively, using the standard disease R = resistant, MR = moderately resistant, MS = moderately susceptible, S = susceptible and VS = very susceptible to disease. Banks is susceptible to the blast race IB-33 and VS to race IE-1k. Banks is rated MS to sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani K|hn), VS for kernel smut (Tilletia barclayana (Bref.) Sacc. and Syd. in Sacc.), S to stem rot (Magnaporthe salvinii (Cattaneo) R. Krause and R. K. Webster), MR to leaf smut (Entyloma oryzae Syd. and P. Syd.), R to brown leaf spot (Cochliobolus miyabeanus (Ito and Kuribayashi in Ito) Drechs. ex Dastur), MR to narrow brown leaf spot (Cercospora oryzae Miyake), and S to false smut (Ustilaginoidea virens (Cooke) Takah). Banks is S to damage caused by rice stink bug (Oebalus pugnax). Banks rates MS to straighthead, a physiological disorder. Plants of Banks have erect culms, dark green erect leaves, and glabrous lemma, palea, and leaf blades. The lemma and palea are straw colored with colorless apiculi, and some short tip awns on the lemma at maturity. Individual milled kernel weights of Banks, Francis, Wells, LaGrue, and Cocodrie, averaged 17.1, 16.7, 19.3, 17.9, and 17.9, respectively, in the ARPT. Banks is nonglutinous, nonaromatic, and covered by a light brown pericarp. It has an average apparent starch amylose content of 228 g kg-1 and an intermediate gelatinization temperature (70 - 75o C), as indicated by an average alkali (17 g kg-1 KOH) spreading reaction of 3 to 5. | 1706679 | PI 643127

PI 634544 | 'Pirogue' | Oryza sativa L. | Louisiana, United States | PVPO | | Not Available | 2004 | DEVELOPED | 2003 | | | | | Cultivar | First high-yielding, early maturing, short stature short-grain rice variety for production in the southern U.S. Excellent grain yield and good milling yield comparable with Bengal. About 102 cm in height and 83 days from emergence to 50% heading. Milled rice is a little chalky, with a L/W ratio of 1.74. Similar low apparent amylose content and low gelatinization temperature compared with Bengal. Flag leaf shorter, wider, and less erect than Bengal. Plants display a fairly dark green leaf color under optimum fertilization. Leaf surface, lemma, and palea glabrous. Some pubescence has been observed on leaf margins. Spikelet straw colored, and very short awns have been observed under certain environmental conditions. Apiculus straw colored. Endosperm non-aromatic, non-glutinous, and has a light brown pericarp. Moderately resistant to sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani) and has good field resistance to both rottenneck blast (Pyricularia grisea) and the physiological disorder straighthead. Also resistant to leaf smut (Entyloma oryzae) and narrow brown leaf spot (Cercospora janseana). Off-types observed and removed from increase fields included any combination of the following: taller, shorter, pubescent, earlier, later, gold-hull, and intermediate grain shape. Total number of off-types was less than 1 per 5,000 plants. | 1651231 | PI 634544

PI 628791 | 'Bolivar' | Oryza sativa L. | Texas, United States | NSGC | | | 2002 | DEVELOPED | 2001 | | | | | Cultivar | Early maturing long-grain rice well suited for the parboiling and canning industries. Very early maturing variety that flowers in about 74 days after emergence. Grain size similar to its parent Gulfmont and larger than Dixiebelle which is also used by the processing industry. Semidwarf (95 cm), taller than Dixiebelle by about 7cm. Good resistance to all of the predominant races of blast disease (Pyricularia grisea) that are known to occur in the U.S. Molecular markers indicate possesses the Pi-b and Pi-kh major blast resistance genes. The level of resistance is such that fungicides will likely not be needed for control of blast in most situations and thus will reduce production costs. Main crop yields are less than Dixiebelle, however ratoon crop potential is superior to most current commercial cvs. Milling yield is also less than Dixiebelle but this is less important to the canning and processing industries where milling occurs after parboiling. | 1631968 | PI 628791

GSOR 311792 | 'CYPRESS' | Oryza sativa L. | Louisiana, United States | GSOR | | | 1992 | DEVELOPED | 1992 | | | | | Cultivar | Core Accession from PI 561734. The Core Collection containing about 10% of the whole NSGC Rice Collection was assembled by stratified random sampling method in 2002, evaluated comprehensively for 25 characteristics and proven to be highly representative of the whole collection. Information drawn from the Core Collection can effectively be used to assess the diversity of the whole collection with 88% certainty. A single plant was selected from each Core accession in 2006 and bulk seed from the single plant selection was produced in 2007 and deposited in the GSOR. DNA extracted from the selected plant was analyzed with one indel marker and 71 SSR (Single Sequence Repeat) markers that cover the entire rice genome about 30 cM apart. A Mini-Core Collection containing about 10% of the Core Collection was subsequently developed and genotyped through various means. The original narrative is: Early maturing (approx. 85 days from emergence to 50% heading), semidwarf. Height average 95cm. Leaves and grain glabrous. Apiculus purple, but coloration fades as grain approaches maturity. Endosperm non-glutinous, non-aromatic. Pericarp light brown. Apparent starch amylose content average 215g kg-1. Because the Core and Mini-Core were developed from single-plant selections from the NSGC accessions which may be phenotypically variable, there is the possibility that the GSOR seed sources are not exactly the same as the NSGC sources. | 1753467 | GSOR 311792

Resistant to narrow brown leaf spot-0. Because the Core and Mini-Core were developed from single-plant selections from the NSGC accessions which may be phenotypically variable, there is the possibility that the GSOR seed sources are not exactly the same as the NSGC sources. | 1754278 | GSOR 311795 |
