NA 87313(variegated selection)Pittosporum tobira (Thunb.) W. T. Aiton NANot Available2023CloneFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Pittosporum tobira (variegated selection). An unusual variegated pittosporum of uncertain origin, but probably was raised from an undocumented cutting of NA 79528 ('Kansai Sunburst', from Asiatica) that has apparently been growing in the center of the Japanese Stroll Garden at the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum for some years. Parts resemble 'Kansai Sunburst' (see NA 79528), but the variegation is quite variable and significantly different on many sections of the plant, with much more diffuse, flecked cream variegation not arranged in any marginal pattern at all. The variegation fades to mostly green on most older leaves, but older leaves on certain portions of the plant are retaining the coloration well, even in the winter. This bears watching because the species tends to be lacking in hardiness, and this selection as it appears at accessioning does not agree perfectly with any known named cultivars and could be unique, or could produce unique (and hopefully stable) selections through propagation of certain branches. [Further update, May 2, 2023: new growth does resemble that of 'Kansai Sunburst' on the majority of the plant, but various branches are producing mostly solid cream new growth that later fades to green with subtle gray-cream flecking; these portions more closely resemble 'Spring Bouquet', but are not quite the same color in new (creamier) or mature (more flecked with variegation) growth.] -SBL Form received: rooted cutting.2155313NA 87313
NA 87441'Marjory Channon'Pittosporum tenuifolium Gaertn. NANot Available2023CultivarFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Marjory Channon'. Plant donated to USNA after the 2023 FONA Plant Sale. Probably grown from a cutting. The plant was donated to FONA from Youngblood Nursery's 2023 Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show booth.2155375NA 87441
NA 77342'Tall 'N Tough'Pittosporum tobira (Thunb.) W. T. Aiton NANot Available2020CultivarFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Pittosporum tobira 'Tall 'N Tough'. From cuttings of NA 77342, propagated in 2020 (multiple plants might have provided the cutting material, but are clonal.) From the record of the parent accession, NA 77342: On looking at old records, talking with Carole Bordelon (who was a horticulturist in Bonsai at the time the original plants were removed), believe this is the same as NA 56706, later named by NCSU. -SBL 2-17-20092151035NA 77342
NA 85900NA 85900Pittosporum sp.NANot Available2019Wild materialFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Pittosporum xylocarpum. Identification as P. xylocarpum as per Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy, who write in their 3/20/2023 web post titled Rare Plant Rumble (https://farreachesbotanicalconservancy.org/Events/Rare-Plant-Rumble.html), "This is our collection from Hubei of this attractive evergreen species with glossy green leaves. We found this as an open-growing shrub 8'-9' tall with a rounded crown leaning out from a bank above a streambed. The 3-valved seed capsules had begun to split open in late October revealing the many shiny reddish seeds. Small yellow flowers in few-flowered clusters are displayed to their best possible advantage against the dark green leaves. Certainly rare in cultivation as an internet search did not yield any results of it being grown." The nursery's listing for the plant was not immediately updated, and still listed the identification as Pittosporum sp. on 3/21/2023. -SBL2157925NA 85900
NA 84828'Golden Temple'Pittosporum brevicalyx (Oliv.) Gagnep. Yunnan Sheng, ChinaNANot Available2017COLLECTED11/08/1980Kunming: woodlands near outside walls of Golden Temple, near Kunming.Wild materialFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Pittosporum brevicalyx 'Golden Temple'. Longwood Gardens obtained this cultivar from Cistus Nursery on April 18, 2005. Reportedly, it did not bloom in a container in their east conservatory and is slated for removal. Cistus Nursery's web site shows a photo of this cultivar at the nursery in April 2010 with the associated number "UCSC 96-187"; however, it appears this is really Quarryhill Botanical Garden number 1996.187, listed in their database as Pittosporum brevicalyx with collection number SAS 26B. This accession essentially derives from NA 49386 (SABE 1980 collection number TRD 37A and presumably SAS 26B as well), two seedlings of which were distributed under number TRD 37A to Saratoga Horticultural Research Foundation by USNA in 1982; an additional seedling was evidently sent that year by the Arnold Arboretum from the same collection under number SAS 26B (associated with their accession number 1567-80). See Holm, Ed. A New Pittosporum. _Pacific Horticulture_ 61(1), January 2000, and the Quarryhill Botanical Garden's Database of Asian Plants in Cultivation. The latter database has long listed an accession of Pittosporum brevicalyx cv. Golden Temple at USNA with collection number TRD 37A, but the cultivar has never been in our collections prior to this accession, so its presence in the database is a mystery.2153800NA 84828

See page 279 of The Explorer's Garden by Daniel Hinkley; in it, he writes that it is "common in the interior of the island at relatively high elevations, seen and collected on the Central Cross-Island Highway near Tayuling. Collections from 1999 have proven to be a sensational, hardy, broad-leaved evergreen shrub, though seedling selection could result in a denser, perhaps even more textural form."
