Narrative
Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Pittosporum xylocarpum. Identification as P. xylocarpum as per Far Reaches Botanical Conservancy, who write in their 3/20/2023 web post titled Rare Plant Rumble (https://farreachesbotanicalconservancy.org/Events/Rare-Plant-Rumble.html), "This is our collection from Hubei of this attractive evergreen species with glossy green leaves. We found this as an open-growing shrub 8'-9' tall with a rounded crown leaning out from a bank above a streambed. The 3-valved seed capsules had begun to split open in late October revealing the many shiny reddish seeds. Small yellow flowers in few-flowered clusters are displayed to their best possible advantage against the dark green leaves. Certainly rare in cultivation as an internet search did not yield any results of it being grown." The nursery's listing for the plant was not immediately updated, and still listed the identification as Pittosporum sp. on 3/21/2023. -SBL
