34NA 87577(Shadow's golden selection)Fagus grandifolia Ehrh. NANot Available2023Wild materialRecorded at the U.S. National Arboretum as Fagus grandifolia (Shadow's golden selection). This is a very rare, gold-leafed selection of the species that Don Shadow originally discovered in far northern Alabama and first collected by him and Harald Neubauer around 1988; he was reportedly considering naming it 'Gold Shadow', according to an article in _The American Gardener_ (September/October 1996, pp. 46-47). This plant was grafted by Ray Jackson and given to Dr. Richard Olsen. Originally discovered and collected from the wild in a rural part of Alabama just across the border from Tennessee. During a return visit to the tree years after the initial discovery and propagation, Don Shadow and Mike Hayman found another, smaller American beech with similar gold leaves growing close to a nearby home along the way. According to Alex Neubauer, the area where the tree was found growing wild has since been logged.2165745NA 87577

Tree planted for Ann Anderson in memory of her parents Louis B. Anderson and Mary S. Anderson by Ann's friends at EDAW. This tree was long mislabeled as 64260-J, but was recovered in part based on the old IPM map of the Columns Overlook area. [ID note: this tree is rather unusual for F. grandifolia; its ID may warrant further investigation. Its foliage is much deeper green (especially in spring) than typical F. grandifolia and somewhat distorted with an undulating appearance, and its internodes are quite short, causing the growht to have a dense, tufted/clumpy look; its overall habit is bushy and many-branched from the base, with no central leader or primary trunks. -SBL]2147075NA 63171
